BRITAIN’S EFFORT
PATIENCE AND MODERATION GREAT DEAL IN THE BALANCE THE ESSENTIALS OF PEACE (omcial Wireless) (Received May 23. 1 p.rn.) RUGBY, May 22 It may be assumed that Sir Xevile Henderson, who has been active in Berlin during the last three days, will not cease to emphasise the importance of patience and moderation in the press comments, while in Prague. The British Government’s views as to the imperative need of avoiding incidents and the desirability of the Czechoslovak Government making unmistakably plain its will to secure a speedy settlement by agreement of the Sudeten and similar problems will be urged by the British Minister. It Is with the essentials of peace that the British policy Is concerned, and at a moment when so much Is In the balance It Is on them that British diplomacy will concentrate, wherever and whenever the opportunity occurs. CONFIDENTIAL MESSAGES STEADY STREAM IN AUSTRALIA INFORMED OF DEVELOPMENTS (United Press Assn.—Elec. Tel. Copyright) (Received May 23. 11.10 a.m.) CANBERRA, May 23 A steady stream of confidential messages from Britain relating to the new developments In Central Europe poured into Canberra at the weekend. The Commonwealth Government is being kept fully Informed of the developments. FORCING A SETTLEMENT GERMANY’S OPPORTUNITY LEADER TO SEE HERR HITLER (United Press Assn.—Elec. Tel. Copyright) LONDON, May 21 Coinciding with the sudden aggravation of the situation in Czechoslovakia, the opinion is widespread in Germany that the time is favourable for forcing nn immediate settlement, says the Berlin correspondent of the British United Press. -The chief reasons are because Britain and France are preoccupied with Ihe Spanish war problems, because of the tension between Italy and France, and because of the fact that the success of the coup in Austria has encouraged the belief in Germany that she is in a position to carry out her programme of uniting all the Germans under the Reich without serious opposition either internally or externally. It is reported that Herr Henlein. leader of the Sudeten r.crmans, who is visiting Berlin, will see Herr Hitler before going to Prague early next week.
