WINTER MEETING OPENS LONDON IN STEEPLEB PRESIDENT'S TO VALAMITO HUSKIE S BIG STEEPLES The winter meeting of the Waikato Racing Club was opened at Te Rapa to-day in bright, crisp weather before a large crowd. The track was dead after the recent rain, but was in splendid winter order. There was some delay at the start, due to the confusion as to which was the correct starting point, and the assistant starter had to return to secure the assurance of the secretary as to the correct barrier. r riie first race on the programme, the Hack and Hunters Steeplechase, was won by the third favourite London by three lengths from Lucidus and Kinkle, the second and first favourites respectively. The first division of the Otorohanga Handicap resulted in a comfortable victory for the favourite Hunting Blood, with Dragon Moth second. Two outsiders, Yalspear and Silver Glow, deadheated for third place. In the Waikato Hurdles the fourth favourite, Silk Sox, defeated Lady England and High Star, the favourites failing in this event. The public were on the mark in the President’s Handicap, however, when Yalamito and Enge, who were strongly supported, were first and second respectively, while the Te Rapa-tralned Malagigl was third.
