BABY IN RIVER
ALLEGED CONFESSION “KNEW WHAT I WAS DOING” (Special to Times.) DARGAVILLE, Saturday “ I decided to get rid of the baby, but I did not know how. I went across to Mrs Alves, whom I have known all my life, and told her that someone was coming from Auckland to adopt the baby. I then had my mind made up that I was going to put the baby in the Northern Wairoa River.” This was portion of the statement made to the police by Hazel Francis Evans (21), single, of Aratapu, which was put In as evidence at the hearing yesterday, in which she was charged with the murder of her infant child on April 3. “ When I put the baby into the river I was quite all right and knew what I was doing,” the statement continued. “ Things were too hard for me, and I knew I could not get a job with it. I got my present job on the Tuesday following putting the baby into the river. I knew I was doing wrong when I threw the baby in.” Mr Singer made a formal objection to the production of the accused's statement. Accused was committed for trial.
