Dempster and the performances of some of England's j players with prospects for Test selec- ! tion. In past matches the star batsmen ! have gained the limelight but this j week the bowlers were the most im- ; pressive. The only batsman in line for selection to score three figures was D. Compton, but C. J. Barnett, E. R. T. Holmes and J. H. Hardstaff j all notched good tallies. Larwood j surprised with a score of 87 not out. The hat-trick was performed by Wright, of Kent, against Gloucestershire, while T. W. Goddard, who represented England last year, secured two good averages. H. Verity and F. R. Brown were two others to strike good form. The details of the matches are as follows: Lancashire v. Middlesex.—Lancashire, first innings, 280 (Paynter 63; Smith four for 47) ; second innings, 318 for seven wickets declared (Iddon 80 . Middlesex, fTrst innings, 267 ;Compton 134; Pollard five for 71); second innings, 218. Lancashire won J Shy 113 runs. Surrey v.
