WOMEN’S INSTITUTE

AT FAIRFIELD Owing to the wet weather, there was a. small attendance of members at the May meeting of the Fairfield Institute, presided over by Mrs Davy. The motto for the month was, “Be not simply good; be good for something.” The competition results were: Plain sewing, Miss Davis 1, Mrs Freeman (special prize) ; handmade handkerchief, Mrs Anderson; hostesses’ competition, Mrs Mateer; gardening circle prize, Mrs L. Andrews. Valuable information was gathered from the roll call, household hints. Most of the afternoon was taken up with Anal Winter Show court arrangements, and members were requested to have their articles at the president's residence on Thursday, May 26. Afternoon tea was served by Mesdames Craig, L. Andrews, Fensom and Miss Davis. AT QORDONTON The monthly meeting of the Gordonton branch of the Women's Institute was held in the Gordonton Hall. Mrs F. Williamson presided over a large gathering, and extended a welcome to visitors and four new members. A roll call, “Empty purses,” caused amusqjnent, one member having over sixty articles in her purse. A competition, best drawing of a sheep, was won by Mrs Boyd 1; Mrs R. Lister 2 (seniors); and Misses Speedy i and J. McLeod 2 (Juniors). An interesting demonstration of ruchlng was given by Mrs Long. During the afternoon a small gift was presented to the retiring secretary. A play-reading given by Mesdames Sainsbury, Williamson and Miss MWilliamson was enjoyed. Afternoon tea was served and the meeting closed with the singing of the National Anthem. AT MELVILLE The May meeting of the Melville branch of the Women's Institute was held in the hall, Mrs Buckland, vicepresident, presiding over a good attendance. Three new’ members were welcomed, Mesdames McKenzie, H. Price, and Miss Matheson.

The roll call “My -Favourite character in fiction,” proved interesting. Several members offered to donate articles for the Y.W.C.A. Winter Showstall. Members were requested to bring exhibits for the Institute court, on the Saturday prior to the opening of the Winter Show. Mrs Hammerton was appointed librarian.

AT WHATAWHATA GROUP MEETING HELD A well-attended and representative meeting was held at Whatawhata recently, the members of the Whatawhata Women's Institute being the hostesses. The meeting commenced with the singing of the song “Comrades and friends,” after which the president. Mrs Rowe, extended a welcome to those present. An enjoyable programme followed. Luncheon was served and the programme continued until afternoon tea. As the Institute was also celebrating Its sixth birthday a beautiful birthday cake made by Mrs Smith, of Koromatua, and iced by Mrs Hirst, of Koromatua, was cut- The candles on the cake were lit by Mrs E. Soper and extinguished by Mrs Wilcock. and the first cut was made by Mrs Russell, all past presidents of the Institute. Mrs Smith and Mrs Hirst, then completed the cutting of the cake. Mrs Rowe presented Mrs J. Ward Chapman, president of the Waikato Federation of the Women's Institutes, •with a bouquet. Tn making the presentation Mrs Rowe expressed her. appreciation to Mrs Ward Chapman, who had given advice on important matters pertaining to the group meetings. Mrs Rowe presented Mrs S. Russell with a bouquet and a small gift as a token of appreciation of the excellent work she had rendered the Institute during the year. A presentation was also made to Mrs F. Barrett, the treasurer. Bouquets were presented to Mrs Rowe in honour of the Institute's birthday by representatives of the Hillcrest, Melville and Horotiu Institutes. Mrs Rowe suitably returned thanks. The group competition, three jars of Jelly, was judged by Mrs Webster, of Whangarei, and Mrs Follett, of Te Pahu, the winning Institute being Hill--1 crest. ■Congratulatory speeches were made ! by representatives of visiting Institutes. Enjoyable Programme A competition, arranged by the Whatawhata Institute, was won by Mrs M. Glover, of Frankton; a competition, arranged by Fairfield, being won by Mrs V. Morley, of Hamil--1 ion East. A singing competition arranged by the Hillcrest Institute was enjoyed, the winning “choir” being members of the Melville Institute. In [ a humorous competition arranged by Whitiora, the winner was Mrs W. | Limmer, of Te Kowhai. A delightful one-act play, was presented by the Melville Institute, those taking part being Mesdames Haverbier, Ander. Price, Bramley and Brown- Te Kowhai Institute's contribution to the programme was a competition won by Mrs Walker of Hamilton East. Miss Joan Laurenson, of Jubilee Institute, gave two much-appreciated tap dances, assisted at the piano by her sister, Miss Mavis Laurenson. Nawton-Rotokauri, arranged a further competition, which was won by Miss N. Barrett, Koromatua. Mrs Wilson, of Jubilee, gave two humorous elocutionary items. A solo

was sung by Mrs J. Ward-Chapman and was muen appreciated. The lucky ticket arranged by Mrs E. Soper and Mrs Barron, of Whatawhata, was won by Miss G. Ericksen. AT MORRINSVILLE Arrangements for the Morrinsvllle court at the Waikato Winter Show were discussed at the May meeting of the Morrinsville branch of the Women’s Institute, when Mrs L. E. Pole presided. Entries for the show court will be received in the Parish Hall on the afternoon of Monday, May 30, in readiness for judging. Owing to the school holidays many apologies for absence were received. New members proposed were Mesdames C. Glimmer. Becker. C. Hughes, D. Johnson, Chapman. Bideous, Misses Hayes and Brighouse. The Institute’s birthday celebration next month will take the form of a social evening in the Masonic Hall. Mrs J. Simpson, delegate to the biennial conference of the Waikato Federatior* held on April 19, read her report, and was accorded a hearty vote of thanks. Miss Glasscock was appointed stamp secretary for the collection and sorting of used stamps to be forwarded to the Federation. The roll-call. “ A Famous Woman.” illustrated how each century has produced many women of outstanding achievements. Mrs C. Gummer gave a demonstration of poker work on wood, and showed some handsome samples of her work.

The competition results were as follows: Sponge sandwich, Mrs .T. Needham 1, Mrs Clark 2; sweets, Mrs Glasscock 1, Mrs Goodrich 2; best bloom, Mrs J. Needham. The hostesses were Mesdames Bayldon, Boles, Bennett, Alexander, Allen, Dunsford and Miss Bennett.

AT KIHIKIHI The Kihikihi branch held its monthly meeting in the Kihikihi Town Hall supper room recently. Mrs E. Raine, ”of Orakau, presided over 15 members. The meeting opened with aspirations, following which Mrs Raine welcomed visitors. Mrs Passau presented the financial report which was commented on by Mrs Steer, president of the Te Awamutu Institute, praise being accorded the Kihikihi Institute for the -splendid credit balance shown. It was arranged to call a committee meeting on May 25. Mrs H. R. Harre, president, was elected as Kihikihi Institute delegate to the June conference in Wellington. Mrs O. O’Brien, of Te Awamutu, gave an interesting demonstration on the making of cushions with the aid of elastic. Mrs O’Brien promised to donate a prize to the Institute for the best cushion made as demonstrated at the meeting. Competitions were won as follows: Eggless cake, Mrs Passau; bed socks. Mrs Kinzett. Mesdames Steer and O’Brien, of Te Awamutu, were the judgesMrs J. Cran supplied a competition for the room. This was won by Mrs Steer, of Te Awamutu. Mrs Helwig in charge of the sales table did good business. •The following were hostesses for afternoon tea, Mesdames J. Cran and G. D. Thomson. Votes of thanks were accorded Mesdames Steer, O’Brien and Andrew, of Te Awamutu. (Continued In next column)

AT PIRCNGIA The May meeting of the Pirongia branch of the Women's Institute was held in the library, Mrs W- 11. Bell presiding. The programme competition entries were read, many useful ideas being suggested. Owing to the absence of the delegate to the Federation bi-annual conference the report of that meeting was held over until the June meeting. The roll call “Strange Customs of Other Lands ” proved interesting. A talk on “The Art of Pottery ” was given by Mrs Bainbridge. This talk was the first of a series to be given by members of the Institute, and wa-s well received. The hostesses were Mrs T. B. Anderson and Mrs Godfrey. An interseting talk on the experiences of a New Zealand returned soldier at the Anzac celebrations in Sydney, given by Mrs Lorimer was much enjoyed. A welcome was accorded Miss Mawson, a member of the Waipawa Institute.

AT MOTUMAOHO At the May meeting of the Motumaoho branch of the Women’s Institute there was a large attendance. Mrs Lennan presided. Members stood in silence as a mark of sympathy with Mrs C. Iverson in her bereavement. The motto for the day was, “A charming manner maketh many friends,” and the roll call was, “New suggestions for programme.” A report of the annual conference of the Waikato Federation of Women’s Institutes, held in Hamilton recently, was given by the Motumaoho delegate, Mrs Warren. A letter of thanks was read from Miss Chadwick, of the Institute link, Dorsetshire, England, and a book was received, to be entered in the library, in remembrance of her visit. Three new members were proposed. It was decided to hold a fancydress ball in the Motumaoho Hall on July 15An invitation was read from the Morrinsville branch of the Women's Division of the Farmers' Union to attend the meeting at which Miss Andrews, the delegate to the PanPaclflc Conference, is to speak. Mrs McLean, of Walton, spoke on the care which should be given chrysanthemums. >he was accorded a hearty vote of thanks’ The competitions for the afternoon were: Sugar-bag apron, puff pastry, and I lie best bloom in my garden, which were won by Mrs T. 0.
