EXCITEMENT IN SYDNEY
EXPLOSION IN A BTORE PEOPLE RUSH INTO STREETS (United Press Assn. —Elec. Tel. Copyright) SYDNEY, May 19 An explosion among fireworks on a counter in G. J. Coles’ main store in Pitt Street during the height of shopping to-day caused a panic among crowds in the building. A fire followed the explosion and filled the place with smoke and fumes. Women rushed from the exits into Pitt Street and King Street in a condition of hysteria, dropping goods and leaving personal effects behind them. Some of the girl employees were overcome by the smoke and fumes and were taken In ambulances to hospital. Others were rescued from the upper floors by ladders. The fire was subdued before much damage was done either to the building or its contents. The Are is said to have been caused by a young man who, when buying fireworks, flicked cigarette ash into a heap of crackers.
