ASSAULT ON A HINDU SENTENCES AT WELLINGTON 'BV TP'Ptrraptt.—rrF«« ASsorlJltlon> WELLINGTON, Thursday Imposing a sentence of three months’ hard labour on William James Gilbert (25), found guilty of common assault on a Hindu, Mr Justice Reed said: Your assault on this unoffensive Indian was simply the act of a larrikin and bully and deserves to be punished accordingly." Gilbert said: "1 can’t help the feeling. I have served nearly three weeks’ imprisonment on remand and it has also put me to a great deal of expense." Charlie Rangi (26) was sentenced to twelve months’ hard labour on a charge of breaking and entering with intent to commit a crime. To the prisoner’s appeal for another chance, the Judge reminded him that he had not availed himself of chances in the past. William Clarence Carroll (26), for forging and uttering, was ordered to come up if called within two years. Cyril Ernest Broom, for theft, was admitted to two years’ probation, and William Robert Thomson, for negligent driving, causing death, received six months’ hard labour.
