CANDIDATES FOR TE RAPA JACK TAR HITS OUT SURELLA HANDLES CONDITIONS WELL (By Telegraph to T«m*« * Y AUCKLAND, Thursdty Rain fell continuously throughout training operations at Ellerslle this morning and made conditions very unpleasant. The No. 2 grass track was available Tor fast work and the going was cutting out a little. Nevertheless, some useful trials were recorded by candidates for the Waikato meeting, which opens on Saturday. The best efforts were credited to Jack Tar. Surella, Alyth, Ohmaha and Mai de Mer. Knight of Australia (Clark) was allotted strong work but was not required to make fast time. KHonsa (McCurdy) got to the end of six furlongs in 1.2 5 2-5. She Increased the speed over the last hair-mile which took 53 1 -ss. Captain Bruce (Wiggins) strode over five furlongs in 1.12 1-5. He was going very easily tnrougnout. Aero King (McTavish) was going comfortably throughout six rurlongs which occupied 1.27 4-5. Over a similar distance Electric Spear (Tremain) recorded 1.2 4 2-5. This novice Is making good progress. Bronze Wing (Metcalf), arter running his first three furlongs In 40 3-58, was going nicely at the end or six in 1.23. Bonnybelle (Clarke) ran home rrom the three furlong post In 40 3-ss. Sh« handled the going in good style.

High Star Shapes Well After taking 39 4-5 s Tor his first three furlongs. High Star (Williams) was going strongly at the end of six In 1.21 3-5. This horses will strip In good rettle for his engagement In the Waikato Hurdles.

Surella (Wiggins) completed five rurlongs in 1.6, the first two being covered in 25 2-ss. He also handled the going well.

Jack Tar (D. Green) completed six furlongs in 1.18 4-5. This was the best of the morning over the distance and If he repeat? this effort on Saturday he should be in the money. El Mevnell (Wiggins) came home from the half-mile In 535. He had a hit In reserve at the nnisn.

The Trimmer (Vaughan), arter covering his first three rurlongs In 40s, was timed to run six In 1.19 4-5. Summary (McTavish) came home with him over the last five furlongs, being several lengths away at the finish arter running the latter distance In 1.8 4-5.

Love Parade (Wiggins) traversed seven furlongs in 1.4 2 1-5, being timed to run his last half-mile in 535.

Mai de Mer (Wiggins) and School Song (Vaughan) were companions over seven furlongs which they ran In 1.36 1-5, the last half-mile being covered In 53 l-ss. School Song had a slight advantage at the finish but Mai de Mer, who was on the outside and covered more ground, Impressed most. Mundane (Tremain) was allotted a similar task which she ran In 1.37 2-5, the last six rurlongs taking 1.23. This filly may be taken up to Te Rapa for the second day or tne meeting. Valmint Works Bmoothly After commencing slowly, Valmint (Wiggins) traversed a round In 1.5 2. the last cix furlongs taking 1.23 4-5 and the final three 41 4-SS. He worked very smoothly throughout. Ohmaha (Kerr), arter running his first three rurlongs In 39 i-ss, got to the end or six in 1.19 1-5. He ran his last halfmile in 53 1 -ss, which was a satisfactory effort. Tybalt (Tonka) was going well within himself while traversing six furlongs In 1.25 1-5. lie will not race again till the Great Northern meeting. Te Hal (Wiggins; cantered round to the three furlong post and ran home In 40 1-5?. a useful effort. Alyth (Gilchrist) reeled off hair-a-mlle in 5 1 2-ss. This also was a smart performance. Shy Nicholson) was allotted strong work which he completed by running his final three furlongs in 43 l-ss. Condition of Tonnerre Tonnerre was given pace work on the sand track. He lias a cracked heel and bis owner. Mr A. Rowan, who came through to Ellerslle this morning, stated that he will have the horse inspected by a veterinary surgeon to-day and it depends on the report whether Tonnerre will *tart ai Te Rapa. Cheval de Volee is to fulfil his engagement in the President’s Handicap at the meeting and will be ridden by H. Long. N. Vaughan ha? bepn engaged to ride Dragon Moth. Tradesman, A raws Hose, Prince Rang! and ‘■liver Glow at Te Rapa on Saturday. lie will also have the mount on Rerepai on the second day.
