BADMINTON IN WAIKATO ASSOCIATIONS YEAR REVIEWED “Although there has been no increase in the number of affiliated clubs or players, the game has maintained its position,” stated the report of the YVaiknto Badminton Association. pr°sented at the annual meeting in Hamilton last evening. The report said that the total membership during the year had been 266. Tt. had been unfortunate that the Morrlnsvllle and Te Kulti clubs had had to he disbanded owing to their halls not being available. Commenting on the competitions the report, stated that the usual interest had centred round the inter-club fixtures. while splendid entries had been received for the annual Waikato tournament. Waikato players had compefpri at other tournaments with outstanding success, and the representative team had won matches against Taranaki and Auckland. the latter being the event of thp year, the winning margin being 10 matches to 6. The “Norman Rrvant Memorial Trophy,” n very fine cup, had been presented hv Mr and Mrs Bryant for annual competition between Auckland and Waikato, and the Waikato Association became the first hojders of the trophy. “That our financial position is sound will be seen from the balance-sheet." added the report. “A profit was made on the annual tournament-, while t.he Auekland-Waikato match resulted in a small loss.
“Since its inception our association* has heen affiliated with the Auckland Association, and through it with the New Zealand Federation,” continued the report. “With the consent of Auckland, application has now been made for direct affiliation with the New Zealand Federation, and should this be granted we hope to be able to develop the game by increasing the number of zones for inter-club play.” Encouraging Outlook “The committee has done a great deal of work during the summer, and already It is obvious that the incoming season will be a record one. Three new clubs in. Hamilton have affiliated, bringing the number of players In this town alone to 250. Efforts are being made to revive the Morrlnsvllle Club. New clubs have been formed at Matangi (25 members) and Rotorua 70 members). The latter club has already opened and arrangements for the Australian team to plav there have been made. The, Te Kulti‘Club is also aboui io re-open, and several country clubs near Hamilton are also considering affiliation. An Australian team will play in Hamilton and Rotorua in June, and the Waikato has been allotted the New Zealand championships, which will be held at the end of August.” concluded the report. The election of officers resulted: President, Dr. G. W. Gower; vioepresidents, Dr. F. A. Lamb and Mr Craik; treasurer, Mr G. Callls; secretary. Mr A. G. Dempster; executive committee, Messrs N.. Ross, W. Tanner and E. McCoskrie; auditor, Mr E. R. Marsh.
The Tainui (Hamilton), St. John's (Te Awamutu), East End (Hamilton), Rotorua and Nurses (Hamilton) clubs were admitted to the association.
