QUEEN CARNIVAL OPENED
ATHLETIC CLUB’S FUNCTION INAUGURATION BY MAYOR At a well-attended social and dance held in tlie Toorak Hall the Hamilton Amateur Athletic and Cycle Club's queen carnival was launched. The opening ceremony was carried out by the Mayor. Mr 11. I). Caro, this being the first public appearance of Mr Caro since his election. Mr Caro said he was delighted and honoured to be of assistance, particularly as the proceeds of the carnival were to be devoted to the furtherance of amateur athletics in Hamilton. “During the last few years Hamilton has gone ahead by leaps and bounds. Unfortunately the facilities for sport, particularly * athletics. have not kept pace with this growth. The Hamilton Athletic and Cycle Club had hopes of big things from their new ground at Hinemoa Park, and I can see no reason why Hamilton should not possess a ground, not only the best in the Auckland province, but the best in New Zealand. A carnival of this nature is an excellent idea not only as a means of raising funds, but also to create interest in the activities of the club.” The queens, with their respective leaders, are as follows: Basketball Queen, Miss Joan Redmond (chairman of committee. Mr R. Orr; secretary, Mr R. Bennett ; Athletic and Harrier Queen. Miss Joy Grozier (chairman of committee and secretary, Mr J. H. Armstrong); Frankton and Country j Queen, Miss Gwen Foster chairman of committee. Mr G. C. A. Gould: secretary, Mr Hush Morton : Business Queen. Miss Tui Beattie chairman of committee. Mr R. L. Manderson; secretary, Miss V. Morgan . The organiser is Mr R. B. Joyes and the execu- , tive treasurer Mr R. Thompson. In addition to dancing, several items contributed by Mr B. Gray ventriloquist). Mr J. Dawson (tenor solos) and Mr C. Williams piano solos and extras) were greatly appreciated.
