WOMEN’S INSTITUTE

AT TE AWAMUTU The monthly meeting of the Te Awamutu branch of the Women s Institute was held in the Parish Hall on Friday. The president, Mrs 11. Steer, occupied the chair and opened the meeting with aspirations. The members stand in silence as a mark of sympathy to Mrs Bryant, Mrs Irwin and Mrs Wearne. There were about 65 members present, apologies being sent in by Mrs Woodward, Mrs Walter Locke, Airs Menary, Mrs Wood, Mrs Skinner, Mrs T. Nicholson, Airs Knight, and Airs Harris. Airs Angus gave a comprehensive report of the Waikato Federation's annual meeting held at Hamilton. The competition next month will be an article made from not more than two sugar bags, trimmings being allowed. The competition this month was for a sponge sandwich, without butter and was won by Airs W. H. Parish who was presented with the cup. A vote of thanks was passed to Mr 11. Steer for donating a silver cup to be competed for. A euchre party is to be given to help defray the expenses to send a delegate to the annual conference. A cushion was donated by Airs AVebber for the same purpose. A dialogue, “The Baggage,” was given by Mrs Angus and Airs Giles and was much appreciated. At the recent drama festival held in Hamilton the Te Awamutu Institute obtained 83 marks out of a possible 100, the winning team gaining 93. Airs Giles’ acting was especially mentioned. The afternoon closed with the “Ode to Friendship.” AT OHINEWAI The monthly meeting of the Ohinewai branch was held in the hall. Airs McGaughran presided over a fair attendance. An interesting demonstration on cooking with an electric stove was given. The monthly competition for the best apple shortcake was won by Afiss Hosking. The best bloom was exhibited by Airs Welch. Airs AI. 0. Hill and Airs Shotbolt were elected to represent the institute at the meeting in Huntly convened to make arrangements for the next group meeting. Aliss Ridgley, who recently attained her majority, was presented with a brooch. The hostesses were Airs Hawken and Alisses Burbush and AlcGaughran. AT ROTO-O-RANGI FIFTH BIRTHDAY CELEBRATED The fifth anniversary of the inception of the Roto-o-rangi branch of the Women’s Institute was celebrated this week in the local school, Airs Wakefield presiding. The proceedings opened with the singing of the National Anthem. Visitors and members were warmly welcomed by the president. Items rendered by the following members were much enjoyed: Duet, Alisses Gwenda and Fay Nickle; songs, Mrs Gavin Reid; tap dance, .Miss Fay Nickle. Airs Aluir (Fencourt Women’s Institute) led the community singing. There were a number of competitions, some amusing, others needing concentration. The results were as follows: Autograph collecting, Airs WCare; historical, Airs W. R. Shaw; newspapers, Aliss Doris Carson; shortbread, Mrs W. Godfrey 1, Aliss Ray 2, Airs J. Reid 3; sponge cake, Airs H. Martin 1, Airs Wakefield 2, Aliss Jcanie Reid 3; bowl of flowers, Airs Pegg 1 and 2. The points prizes for the year were awarded to Mrs W. Wakefield J, Airs Pegg 2. The points prize for cooking was won by Airs Wakefield with Airs Reid second. Airs Wakefield was presented with a beautiful bouquet by Airs S. D. Low, president of the Fencourt Institute. Aliss Nancy Wallace (Maungautatari Institute) and Airs Goodwin (Kaipaki Institute) on behalf of the members of their institutes, conveyed congratulations and best wishes to members of Roto-o-rangi Institute.

A hearty vote of thanks was accorded Mrs R. Martin, who made and presented the beautiful birthday cake. An enjoyable afternoon concluded with the singing of Auld Lang Syne. AT HANQATIKI Airs Pettigrew presided at the monthly meeting of the Hangatikl branch of the Women’s Institute. There was a good attendance of members, the proceedings being opened with the singing of the ‘‘Ode to Friendship” and the reading of the Creed. The president read the report of the King Country Federation. The roll call was “Talks on Gardening,” while a social afternoon which followed proved enjoyable. An exhibition by a member of Indian Bokhara work on silk bedspreads was instructive. Alesdames Sidney and B. Board were the hostesses. AT WAITOA A pleasant afternoon was spent by the members when the Waitoa branch of the Women's Institute heLd its May meeting in the local hall recently. The president, Airs H. Suckling, occupied the chair, and a large number was present. A vote of thanks was passed to Mrs AI. .Maclean, who gave a demonstration of smocking. A short play given by Alesdames Lewis and Foster, of .Morrinsville, was greatly appreciated. A competition for a hand-made handkerchief was won by Airs R. Colson. The thought for the month was “Don’t grumble, don't bluster, don’t dream, and don't shirk; don't think of your worries, but think of your work; the worries will vanish, the work will be done; no man sees his shadow who faces the sun.” The meeting closed with afternoon tea served by the hostesses for the day, Alesdames A. Sowter and H. Blomfleld.
