CHURCH AND STATE
CONDITIONS IN GERMANY PASTORS AND THE OATH GRAVE CONFLICT OF CONSCIENCE United Press Assn.—Elec. Tel. Copyright LONDON, May 17 Ten thousand pastors of the Protestant Church must decide before May 31 between dismissal or the oath of loyalty to Herr Hitler in obedience to the laws of the State prescribed for civil servants, says the Berlin correspondent of tlie Times. This is involving a grave conflict of conscience and interest among the pastors of the confessional movement, because by taking the oath tiiev would l»e commit fed to unreserved obedience to a Church authority they do not recognise. The derm: was issued by Dr. Werner, the Stale-appointed head of the Evangelical Church, under orders from the Ministry 0 f Church Affairs. The pastors of the confessional movement told Herr Hitler the: did not object to taking the oath under ivii authority, but. the Church authority was not entitled to demand a political oath This attitude hi 1934 enabled successful resistance to a similar order.
