NOT EQUITABLE
SUPERANNUATION SCHEME SOCIAL CREDIT CRITICISM The national superannuation proposals as outlined by (he leaders of the Government came in for some trenchant criticism at a special meeting of the Hamilton branch of the Douglas Credit Movement on Monday evening. There was a representative attendance, and. speaking from the chair, Mr E. M. Masters explained that he had called the meeting to test the feeling of members and see what could be done to persuade Ihe Government to make their proposals more equitable. “The Prime Minister has asked for suggestions, and as national superannuation comes near to one of our fundamental principles I feel we should declare ourselves in this matter," said Mr Masters. Several members expressed the opinion ilia I taking from one, section of Ihe community by taxation to give to another would do nolhing to make good fin 3 deficiency of purchasing power which was known to exist. “If wp must go on under orthodox finance- and I do not admit that that is noressary 1 do not think any of us mind paying taxation to provide oldage pensions, hut. a superannuation scheme should be based on the principle that all those who pay in should have the right fo draw out," said Mr •7. H. Penniket. who added that any suggestions from the branch should go through the headquarters of the movement. Messrs J. E. Tidd and W. Bourne favoured Ihe idea of the heads of the movement submitting a plan to the superannuation committee. The following resolution, moved by Mr Masters and seconded by Mr Bourne, was carried unanimously; "That in view of the Prime Minister’s appeal to citizens to assist and cooperate with suggestions for advancing the social and economic welfare of the people, this meeting considers that the leaders of the movement should submit a plan for New Zealand in place of the present suggested superannuation proposals, and that such plan be delivered to the Prime Minister and the Minister of. Finance by a deputation representative of the movement."
