VISITORS ON THE SCENE

SCHOOLING OVER COUNTRY BRYCE STREET—LUCIDUS (By “Martian”) Additional interest was lent to training operations at Te Rapa this morning by the infusion of visiting talent which participated in the 6emi-final gallops for the Waikato Racing Club’s winter meeting on Saturday and Monday. The chief item of interest was a schooling trial over a round of the steeplechase country in which Lucidus, Bryce Street, Mio Lume and Neil were associated- The course proper, 66ft. out from the rails, was open for fast work yet, as compared with past years, the programme was a rather restricted one and disclosed little of unusual interest. Proceedings were opened by Young Paddon (A. Gilmer) and Lornacre (H. Long), the former jumping off a couple of lengths in front of his companion and shading him on the post in 1.6 4-5. It was a useful effort under the conditions and time which was not bettered during the morning. Master Brierly (F. Hain) finished clear of Prince Rangi (J. Winder) at the competition of a round in 2.85, their first five furlongs occupying 1.12. Master Brierly was doing his work well over the concluding stages and should strip in good heart for racing at the meeting, where on the first day he is an acceptor for the President’s Handicap. Friskland (W. Thomson) and a Hunting Song filly (H. Long) were sent five furlongs, from the mile peg three furlongs disc, clocking 1.7$ for the distance. Clooneen Hits Out Clooneen (H. Long) alone, shaped pleasingly over half-a-mile in 55$s. He was travelling evenly throughout and should lack little on the score of condition for racing ahead.

There was little between Malaglgl (J. McLaughlin) and Abbey Lass (N. R. McKenzie) at the end of a round in 2.12 1-5. Malaglgl is & rather lazy track worker. He looks a picture of condition and should make a bold bid for supremacy In the mile and a-quarter President’s Handicap here on Saturday. Sinking Fund (R. Telford) finished* a couple of lengths In advance of Queen Lu (A. Gilmer) over six furlongs in 1.24, the final half-mile being cut out in 58s. Sinking Fund was doing his work well at the end. Kilberis (N. C. Trillo), who looks improved, was sent over a mile and aquarter, being timed over a round in 2.15. He is to contest the Waikato Hurdles on Saturday and is not without prospects. Tosh Beats Prinoe Aore Tosh (W. Thomson) was doing better than Prince Acre (J. Winder) over the deciding stages of five furlongs in 1.6 4-5. Both were travelling well within themselves throughout and in the event of rain falling In the interim the prospects of Prince Acre will be appreciably enhanced. Tosh is to be offered at auction on the morning of the first day’s racing hereWhirling was worked at a little better than strong three-quarter pace over a mile. Light Comedy (H. Long) worked lazily over a round in 2.12 4-5, time which she would have improved on had she a companion to assist her. This member of the Julian establishment is in good heart for racing at the meeting being an improved mare as the result of her Pukekohe outing. Rollicker (P. McD. Brady) came home from the half-mile in 56 l-ss. It will not be on the score of condition if he fails to give of his best in sprint engagements at the fixture. Red Fox (J. Muir) ran once round in 2.145. He has been nominated for the second day here, but is a doubtful starter at the fixture.

Schooling Over Country Chief interest of the morning centred on the schooling bout over a round of the steeplechase country by Lucidus (A. Gilmer), Bryce Street (N. C. Trillo), Mlo Lume (J. F. Fergus) and Neil (H- Stokes). Lucidus and Bryce Street set a torrid pace early and sorted themselves out In front of Mio Lume with Neil tailed off some lengths behind. They carried on thus throughout, Lucidus finishing a shade in front of Bryce Street with Mio Lume about ten lengths away and a gap of some fifteen lengths to Neil. All gave a polished exhibition fencing, especially Neil, who lacked* the early pace to foot it with the leaders. The only other Jumping done was accomplished by Valpai (J. F. Fergus) and Orac (P. McD. Brady) who were sent over four flights of hurdles. Valpai jumped well while Orac's display was an improvement on recent essays. Visitors on Bc«ne Among the visiting horses on the scene are Wotan and Silk Sox (New Plymouth), Huskie, Clooneen (Matamata), Neil (Auckland) and Mio Lume and Mia Regina (Cambridge).
