PREVENTING CRIME
DUTY OF POLICE FORCE ALERT CONSTABLE PRAISED (By Telegraph.—Press Association) WELLINGTON, Monday Emphasising that the most important duty of a police officer was not only to detect crime hut to prevent crime, particularly more serious crime, Mr J. 11. Luxford, SM„ commended Constable Burnett at the conclusion of the hearing of a case today of attempted conversion ot a motor-cycle valued at £JOS against Denis Anthony Franklin (24), tailor's cutter. It was stated that Constable Burnett, on duty at the railway station, observed the accused sit astride a motor-cycle and attempt io start it. He approached accused, who made the explanation that he had missed the train to Johnsonville and was going to use a friend's motor-cycle. Asked who the friend was, he got the reply • that’s for you to find out.” Accused gave evidence, after which he was convicted. Sentence was deferred till to-morrow.
