BADMINTON WIN
WISDEN CUP MATCH WAIKATO DEFEAT TARANAKI MARGIN OF EIGHT GAMES Waikato retained the Wisden Cup when they defeated the Taranaki badminton challengers by 12 games to four in the Bledisloe Hall on Saturday evening. Three of the games in which the visitors were victorious were won by default. Last year the home team took the trophy from Auckland and Saturday night was the fourth occasion on which the Taranaki and Waikato teams had met, the latter staving off defeat every time. There was a large gallery of spectators at the contest. Generally the Waikato team was the stronger although the Taranaki players showed good form, indicating that they would provide- serious opposition in the future. J. Spedding was the most impressive player in the visiting team and gave a very spectacular display. He was ably supported by R. Therkleson and D. Therkleson. H. H. Fow and A. Dempster helped the Waikato team along the road to victory, and in the ladies’ section Mrs Fow, and Miss Edmondson, the ex-New Zealand title holder, showed outstanding form. In the B grade competition some interesting games were played * and these aroused considerable interest. It was the opinion of Mr C. J. E. Smith, president of the New Zealand Badminton Association, that Waikato possessed the finest facilities in New Zealand for the game in the spacious Bledisloe Hall- Mr Smith captained the visiting team while Dr. G.
