TIDAL WAVE IN NEW GUINEA NO THREAT TO HUMAN LIVES (United Press Assn.—Elec. Tel. Copyright) (Received May 16, 11 a m.) SYDNEY. May 16 Reports have been received in Sydney that Mount Bagana. on the island of Bougainville, in the mandated territory of New Guinea, is erupting freely, but as it is in wild country no threat to human lives is anticipated. The damage done by eartli tremors and a tidal wave at Salamaua on May 13 is estimated at about £2OOO. Another mild shock occurred on Friday night. Salamaua is the site favoured for the capital to replace Rabuul. following tin' disastrous eruption which be- # gan on May 29 last year.
RECORDED IN NEW ZEALAND CALCULATIONS IN WELLINGTON (By Telegraph.—Press Association) WELLINGTON. Monday The New Guinea earthquake mentioned in the cables was recorded at the Dominion Observatory, it began at 3,17 a.m. and for over 30 minutes the seismographs were recording strongly. Calculations made in conjunction with information from other recording centres placed the disturbance as In latitude four degrees south, longitude 149 east, which would be approximately 150 miles west of the area reported to be shaken.
