TROUT SEASON OVER
BEST FOR FOUR YEARS LATER CLOSING ADVOCATED (Special to Times) TAUPO, Monday In the opinion of local and visiting anglers, the angling season at Taupo, which closed at 11 p.m. on Saturday, has proved the most successful, both in the number of fish taken and their condition, for the past four seasons and the excellent sport which obtained, particularly in the concluding days of the season, has confirmed the belief of many anglers that a later opening and closing would be in the interests of sport. A committee of visiting anglers is to be formed to bring various matters concerning fishing in the lake and tributary streams before the Department of Internal Affairs. A large body of angling opinion favours the opening of the season on December 1 and the closing on May 31.
Since December last, uniformly good sport has been obtained in the area, particularly on the Waitahanui Stream, which lias undoubtedly been the most popular rendezvous during the season. During the last few days, many excellent bags, with individual fish of up to 101 b., were taken there, while at Waihoro three rods in one evening took 34 fish of up to 71b. One bag of six taken at the outlet of the Waitahanui, near the wharf, included a 17sh of 8 41b.—a record for that particular spot, and at Whakaipo one fisherman creeled eight scaling 541 b., one fish weighing 91b. HAMILTON PARTY’S BAG While conditions were far from ideal at Taupo for the final days of the fishing season, three Hamilton anglers secured 30 trout averaging 3 lb at Turangi. between Thursday and Saturday. All the fish were in good condition and the largest, weighing 7 lb, was a particularly good specimen.
