HARRIER ACTIVITIES
COMBINED RUN LARGE MUSTER OF STARTERS (By “Stamina”) There was a large muster of members from both the C.Y.M. and Hamilton Harrier Clubs for the first combined run of the season held from St. Andrew’s Hall, Te Aroha Street, last Saturday afternoon. There must have been fully fifty lined up for the start and the three packs set out at eightminute intervals. The trail was a good, clean one and the distance of five miles suited everybody. The paper led by way of Te Aroha, Argyle and Francis Streets across Peachgrove Road and through a belt of trees for 350 yards. It then described a semi-circular course around the Ruakura Farm, and came back on to Tramway Road in the vicinity of the farm woolshed. The last stage of the journey comprised a little over a mile of road work back to Te Aroha Street via East Street, Hukanui Road and Grey Street. Good Time Registered Each pack registered good time for the distance and at the corner of Te Aroha and Grey Streets the slow pack assembled for a run-in. J. Row, of the Hamilton club, prevailed in the sprint, and Louden and Primrose were the first home for C.Y'.M. j The pack to give the best showing on the day was undoubtedly the med- ' ium one. Leaving eight minutes ; ahead of the fast division, they bunched together well all the way, and were home ten minutes ahead of the back men. Smith, Millar and Woods were i
forcing thenace in this section, and in the runr-Tfame Smith finished convincingly ahead of Miller and Dowd with Woods and Armstrong next. The first three mentioned would have held their own with the fast pack on the day, but should take things a little more gently for at least one more run. Collins Again Prominent The fast pack maintained a steady pace but about a mile and a-half from home Collins and R. Gardner went for the doctor and were well clear of the bunch when they reached home. Collins is unquestionably fit, but it is doubtful whether 1L Gardner is yet ready for such strenuous performance. Last season he reached his peak, right at championship time and was content to stay back for the first couple of runs. Trow and Dent again gave prominent showings and are decided acquisitions to the Hamilton club. I. Overheu, was behind them and was first C.Y.M. man home in this division. He is a very good cross-country man and always seems to put up a good showing. Choat was next to finish and was followed by A. Crabb and Gardner, last year’s captain, who was a welcome visitor last Saturday. The gathering in itself displayed a fine spirit of friendship between the two clubs and there can be no doubt that at least- two such functions each season may be looked upon as permanent fixtures in the Hamilton harrier world. At the conclusion of the run Mr Cook, captain of the C.Y'.M. club, thanked the Hamilton members for their hospitality and expressed the hope, that a return visit be paid later in the season.
Next Week’s Road Race On Saturday next, May 21, the Hamilton club will conduct its first race of the season; —the 4-mile novice road race from the Y.M.C.A. This is a straightout handicap event in which every club member may compete, but only a competitor who has not previously won a harrier event may claim the first place. Last year’s winner was L. D. Irwin, who should be well to the fore again next week.
