WOMEN’S INSTITUTE

AT hillcrest The Hillcrest Women’s Institute held its monthly meeting in the Nixon Street Hall, Hamilton East recently, Mrs Morley, the president, presiding over a good attendance. .VTangernents were made to visit Whalawhatu lnsti'ute on May 12. and the Old People’s Home on the afternoon of May 19. Each member is to take a plate towards afternoon tea and to meet at Vickery's Corner at 2 p.m. The Rev G. A. Crossman gave an interesting talk on “Delphinium growing.” Mrs Haines, vice-president, returned thanks to the Rev. Crossman. Members decided to help the Y-W.C.A. stall at the winter show bydonating suitable articles, the secretary to notify the Y.W.C.A. secretady. A comprehensive report on the recent Federation meeting was given by the delegate, Mrs C. Cockhead. She also reported on the recent group meeting of delegates. The roll call “Kitchen hints,” was well responded to. The competitions were:—A jar of marmalade, Mrs Cox 1, Mrs Haines 2, Mrs G. Cockhead 3; fancy apron, Mrs Cockhead 1, Mrs Roberts 2, Mrs Haines 3. The June competition, will be: Six tarts short pastry, plate of plain toffee and an article made out of cardboard. The roll call will be “Competitions you would like,” and the hostesses appointed are Mesdames Forsyth, Farrelly and Saunderson.

The motto for next month is “A contented mind is a blessing kind.” AT LICHFIELD Mrs G. G. Ranger presided over the monthly meeting of the Lichfield branch of the Women’s Institute recently. The motto was: “A smiling face is better than a five pound note.” Mrs Kinlock gave a report on the annual Federation meeting held in >latamata in. April. Apologies for absence were received from Mesdames Burgess, Gallagher and Boyles. Mrs Eneddon's invitation for the next Institute meeting to be held at her residence was accepted. Members were very pleased with the new cupboard built for the Institute. A discussion was held on the points cup and the advisability of giving miniatures to the winners. The matter is to be finalised at the next meeting. It was decided in future to have just one vote for the monthly competition. The roll call, “A hasty luncheon dish,” proved interesting. The monthly competition. A darned sock,” was won by Mrs Gallagher, with Mrs Ranger second. This was the end of the year for the competition points and Mrs Gallagher and Mrs Ranger tied for first place. Mrs Sneddon gave an interesting demonstration of papier machie work. Mrs Vaughan, a visitor from Tuakau, entertained with several songs. Afternoon tea was served by Mrs Wooderson and Miss Lynn.

AT EUREKA The monthly meeting of the Eureka branch was held recently, Mrs Harington presiding over a fair attendance of members. The meeting opened with the reading of the Creed and the terasurer presented her reportMrs Harington gave a comprehensive report of the round table conference recently held In Hamilton. The president welcomed Mrs Sang, a member of the executive, and presented her with a bouquet. Bouquets were also presented to the retiring president, Mrs Harris, and the treasurer, Mrs C. Masters. The arranging of the birthday party was left to the committee. It was decided to ask the St. John Ambulance Association for a speaker to attend next meeting. As the birthday party will be held in the afternoon it is to be hoped all members will be present and bring their friendsThe roll call. "Party suggestions,” was well responded to. The flower competition was won by Mrs Larsen, with Mrs Harris second Mrs Townsend was successful in the eirdlo scones competition and the hall competition was won by Miss Una Townsend. Mesdames Harris and Young were the hostesses for the afternoon--

AT TE KAWA At the May meeting of the Te Kawa branch of the Women's Institute Mrs Coverdale presided over a good attendance of members Miss Alderson, delegate to the King Country Federation meeting held recently at Te Kuiti, gave an interesting account of the proceedings. Mrs Coverdale also spoke of the benefits members had received from the meeting. It was decided to hold a dance at the end of the month to^'raise money for the institute community fund. The Rev. M. Sullivan gave an eloquent talk on “World affairs.” He was accorded a hearty vots of thanks. A competition for an eggless cake was won by Mrs Pivac with Mrs Benton second. Afternoon tea was served by the hostesses for the afternoon, Mesdames Campbell and J. Henderson. AT PUKEMIRO The Pukemiro branch of the Women's Institute held its May meeting in the Pukemiro Miners’ Hall- The president, Airs Dunn, opened the meeting with the Aspiration and Ode, after which she welcomed visitors. The motto for the months was: "There is so much good in the worst I of us, and so much bad in the best of us, that it ill behoves any of us, l to talk about the rest of us.” Mrs Robinson gave her report of the Waikato Federation meeting held recently in Hamilton, for which she was accorded a hearty vote of thanks. To the roll call, “What I most dislike doing in the kitchen,” every member responded. Airs F. Amuketi, of the newlyformed Maori Women's Institute at Ohautira, gave a demonstration of wool spinning, and articles made by her from raw wool were exhibited". This demonstration proved very interesting and Mrs Amuketi was heartly thanked. The competitions resulted: Article made from flour bags, Mrs Dunn (boys’ shirt), 1; Airs Shearer (apron), 2; Airs Tait (duster bag), 3 . Kiss cakes, Airs Tait, 1; Mrs Pears, 2; Mrs Kennedy 3. Competitions in the social hour were won by Miss Amuketi and Mrs Bland. Alesdames Cochrane and Drinnan were hostesses.

AT KAIPAKI The monthly meeting of the Kaipaki branch of the Women's Institute was held in the hall on Wednesday. The president, Airs Graham, presided and extended a welcome to members and visitors. The meeting opened with the Institute song. A letter from the Cambridge division of the Farmers’ Union inviting members to their birthday party, was accepted. The roll call. “What to avoid doing in a sick room,” was well answered. Airs A. Ramsay, Hillcrest. gave an interesting and practical demonstration in poker work, showing also,, some fine, finished articles. She was given a hearty vote of thanks. The monthly competitions were : (a) best vase of flowers, Aliss Jeanette Finly; (b) best art and craft article. Aliss Jean Graham 1, Aliss Vera Wallis 2. Further arrangements were made regarding the Institute Court for the Waikato Winter Show. Afternoon tea wae served by the hostesses, Alesdames F. Boyd, D. Alitchell and Aliss J. Graham. Alisses V. Wallis and N. Godkin were in Charge of the sales tabia

AT HORSHAM DOWNS The May meeting of the Horsham Downs branch of the Women's Institute was held in the hall recently, Mrs Hunter presiding over a fair attendance. The reciting of the Creed opened the' meeting. The roll call was, Say something. member was welcomed. A vote of thanks was accorded Airs Fulton for her interesting report on the Waikato Federation meeting. The members of the drama circle entertained with a play reading. "Little Paradise." The afternoon closed with the serving of afternoon tea by the hostesses. Mrs Linehan and Miss Goodison.

AT WIHITIKAHU The monthly meeting of the Whitikahu branch was held in the new Whitikahu hall. Mrs Brown presided over a good attendance of members. Three, new members were welcomed. Airs Williams gave an interesting report on the annual meeting of the Waikato Federation. As last Sunday was Mothers’ Day, Airs Boyce gave a reading on Mothers' Day and a white flower was given to rnembers. f The motto was "A child's best friend is it's mother" and the roll call, “What you consider a mother’s greatest responsibility.” A competition was won by Mrs Boyce and Airs AlcQueen, and Airs Williams won the competition for the best bloom in the garden. The hostesses were Alesdames N. and S. AlcConnell, Dean and McGallum. AT TE HOE In spite of inclement weather a pleasant meeting was held when the Te Hoe branch of the Women's Institute celebrated its eighth birthday. Among the guests were visitors from Hoe-o-ta.inui League of Mothers, Taupiri, Ohinewai, Whitikahu and Otorohanga Women's Institutes. The president received bouquets from several visiting Institutes. Gifts of china and linen were made to Airs McQueen, Mrs Williams and Miss Price. In appreciation of the splendid cooperation. each member was the recipient of a gift of china or glassware. In honour of Alothers’ Day, the adules were given a white flower, made and presented by Mrs C. W. Thompson. The birthday cake was a feature of the luncheon table. Miss Le Heron gave an interesting “Golden thread” talk. Competitions were won by Mrs Cuff and Airs McKeon, and a musical programme, provided by visitors and members, was greatly enjoyed. AT TE PAHU The May meeting of Te Pahu branch of the Women's Institute was held on the second Thursday of the month. Airs Watt presided over a good attendance of members. A travel talk given by Aliss M. Drummond was listened to with interest. . TT .„ A book was presented to Miss Hills, who was president and treasurer for several years. Competitions for the day were: Chrysanthemums, won by Aliss Strong, with Mrs Clarke second, and a spray of wood fibre roses, won by Airs Charleston, with Aliss Newlands second. A letter was read from the Cuddington and Sandiway link, which also forwarded a calendar with, views of English scenery.
