GOLF AT ST. ANDREWS
HAMILTON LADIES’ CLUB AOTEA ROA CUP PLAY (By “Dormy”) The golf season seems to have go t under way at last. There have been many interruptions so far but now that the Easter holidays are well over and we have had our wet week there is every cnance that things will go with a swing. There is a busy season ahead for, besides the weekly fixtures, there are the club foursomes, the yankee match competition, putting competitions and inter-club matches. There is also a one-dav tournament on May 30 and on June 9 the committee is inaugurating what it is hoped will become an annual event —a golf dinner. Match With Cambridge Last Monday 20 Cambridge players visited St. Andrews- There were many even games and the Cambridge team were the victors by one game Those who won thei games for Hamilton were :—Mrs li. McDonald, Mrs
Rawlings, Mrs C. Bennett, Mrs S. Bennett, Mrs McCracken, Mrs King, Mrs Jewell, .Mrs Toombs and Mrs Joy, Mrs Isdale and Mrs Raven were all square. The Hamilton club hopes to have their revenge on June 2, when a team is going to Cambridge. Mrs Gordon Smith has been receiving many congratulations on winning the Jennings Cup. It is a popular and well-deserved win as Mrs Smith always supports the club in its ventures. The Wednesday set for the Coronation medal and the Aotea Roa Cup was so wet that the competition was postponed untii the next day. The course dried up wonderfully and there should have been many good scores but, lor seme reason that is hard to tathom, there were no reductions. For tiie Coronation medal Mrs Joy was 77 net, and for the Aotea Roa Cup Mrs Toombs was 72. This was a good score and it is expected that this player will soon he reducing her handicap as she has already played to il twice this season. Douglas Cup The qualifying round for the Dou.clas Cup was played on a beautiful day, but in this competition also the
! scores were disappointing. Most of j the players reported that they were i putting badly and it may be that the ! greens were unusually fast. Mrs ; Worley qualified first with a 6core of j 72 net, and she also should reduce her handicap soon as she should have been I at least four better on the last three j holes. j There have been only two reduc- ; tions in handicap during the last i month, byt they were both good ones, j Miss Peggy Wilson reduced four , strokes—from 34 to 30, and Miss | Rohan Bell Cve strokes —from 29 to I There have been several enquiries i lately as to the penalty incurred if a | wrong hall is played. In medal play i the penalty for hitting one or more ; strokes with a wrong ball is two strokes end the player must also go back and play the right ball.
