BRITAIN AND ITALY
CREDITS MAY BE GIVEN THE STRAIN OF RE-ARMAMENT SECRET MISSION TO GERMANY (United Press Assn.—Elec. Tel. Copyright) (Received May 14, 11.35 am.) LONDON, May 13 The Australian Associated Press understands that Sir Leitli Ross has gone to Rome and Berlin on a secret mission. No indication of the objects of the visit has leaked out, but it is believed that he is going to Rome as a sequel to the Anglo-ltalian agreement. Italy’s economic position has been seriously weakened by the strain of re-armament and the wars in Abyssinia and Spain, and has been intensified by drought, considerably reducing agricultural production, which is the mainstay ot’ Italian exports. It is believed that if Signor Mussolini faithfully adheres to the agreement Mr Chamberlain will be sympathetic to Italy securing credits on a strictly business basis. It is thought that Mr Chamberlain, who is still anxious for the economic appeasement of Europe, considers that despite the deadlock in Hie AngloGerman political negotiations, there is a forlorn chance of opening economic discussions with Germany.
