NEWSPRINT INDUSTRY
PURCHASE OF PAPER MILLS BRITISH INTERESTS PROTECTED United Pres* Assn.—Elec. -el. Copyright LONDON, May 12 Bowater and Company, Limited, have agreed to purchase the Cornerbrook paper mills in Newfoundland as a step to safeguard the British newsprint industry from a threatened shortage of pulp which began in 1937 and resulted in a rise in prices, accentuated by the tactics of Scandinavian producers. British newspapers came to the assistance of Bowaters and voluntarily agreed to an increase in prices. The incident showed the vulnerability of the British newsprint industry unless It controlled the sources of supply, hence the present deal.
