TOPICS OF THE DAY
Britain s Rearmament “The interesting point to note,” says The Times (London), “is that no Government would dare to present such defence estimates to the House of Commons without solid foundations for the confidence which they reflect; and it is not pushing speculation beyond legitimate lengths to infer that the Government, though on the one hand determined to carry on with their policy of national defence, anticipate on the other hand a rich harvest of industrial confidence from their policy of international appeasement and of promoting the revival of international trade. Everyone will trust that the confidence displayed in these figures will be justified, and that the burdens in prospect will ride easily on the shoulders of an active and expanding industry. Meanwhile it is a proof of our immense financial strength that burdens on this scale can be contemplated at all without involving deterioration in tjie standard of living or interference with the ever greater efforts which the State is making to help its less fortunate citizens.”
