Black .. .. 5,210 Majority for Cox .. 1,671 ELEOTION IN DUNEDIN VICTORY FOR CITIZENS’ TICKET NINE OF 12 SEATS SECURED (By Telegraph.—Press Association) DUNEDIN, Thursday The City Council ’ election was a great victory for the Citizens’. Association, who secured nine of the 12 seats plus the return of the Association’s mayoral nominee. Among the defeated Labour members was Mr Mark Silverstone, finance chairman on the former council. Proportionately the representation of the contending parties on the Harbour Board and Hospital Board is almost similar. An unusual feature is that a newcomer, Mr R. Walls (Labour) secured a seat on all three bodies. The poll was the largest in the history of the municipal elections, 31,866 polling of 44,287 eligible. A LABOUR BUCOEBB
CHRISTCHURCH POLLING (By Telegraph.—Press Association) CHRISTCHURCH, Wednesday. The voting for the Christchurch Mayoralty resulted as follows: R. M. Macfarlane (L-) .. 18,698 Dr. John Guthrie (C.) .. 17,418 Majority for Macfarlane 1,280 The former Mayor, Mr J. W. Beanland (C.), did not seek re-election. The result of the by-election in March, 1936, due to the resignation of the Hon. D. G. Sullivan, \yas as follows : J. W. Beanland (C.) .. 15,083 J. K. Archer (L.) .. 14,172 E. L- Hills (1.L.) .. 449 Majority for Beanland . 911 The new Mayor, Mr R. M. Macfarlane, has been secretary of the North Canterbury Labour Representation Committee for a number of years. He has been a member of the City Council, and contested the Christchurch North seat at the last general election. He will be a candidate for the same seat again at the coming election. x REPRESENTATION DOUBLED DECISIVE LABOUR ADVANCES (By Telegraph.—Press Association) CHRISTCHURCH, Thursday Labour yesterday doubled the number of Its representatives the Christchurch City Council and now holds a ten to six majority, which will also be strengthened by the vote’ of the newly-elected Labour Mayor, Mr McFarlane. The representation of the Citizens’ Association was reduced from 11 seats, which gave it a big majority on the last council, to six, and four sitting members lost their seats- On the Harbour Board four city seats went to Labour, while on the Hospital Board Labour captured six of the nine seats.
