RELIGION IN SCHOOLS MINISTER’S PROPOSALS j Special to Times) AUCKLAND. Wednesday j The Minister of Education, the Hon. ! P. Fraser, has decided to recommend that no legislative action affecting religious exercises in State schools be taken pending a consultation with . representatives of Ch.urches and other j organisations interested. The decision was announced last night at a public meeting of about 1500 people in the Town Hall under . the auspices of the Bible-in-Schools , League. A telegram from the Minister was also read, undertaking that the status quo would not be interfered with pending the consultations. ’ The meeting had been called to protest against the Minister’s proposal ] to include in the Education Amendment - Bill a clause preventing authority for daily religious exercise. The following resolution was car- ■ ried: “That this great meeting of Auckland citizens solemnly affirms that < the recognition of Almighty God is the * corner-stone of the education system < of any Christian community, and It * protests against any move to withdraw : even the small recognition now given; i it rejoices in the decision of the Minister of Education to maintain the ] rights now enjoyed under the Education Act pending a conference of all parties interested in the religious edu- 1 cation of our chlidren and calls on all j Christian people to uphold their rights in this matter while, at the same time j J and in all charity, safeguarding the j \ rights of minorities." j j
