MINISTER’S DEATH

FORMERLY IN HAMILTON WORK FOR PRESBYTERIANISM The death occurred at Oamaru on Tuesday of the Rev. E. J. Adams, who was Minister In charge of St. Andrew's Presbyterian Church. Hamilton, from 1003 to 1910. A son of the Rev. T. Adams and Mrs E. Adams now of Wanganui), Mr Adams was oppainted to Hamilton (then a home mission station ' following the death of Mr C. Tennett. who was drowned while bathing in the Waikato River. Mr Adams entered into the work with great zest, and he did much tn establish Presbyterianism in the district. Gathering around him a band of young, devoted workers, he started preaching stations throughout his charge, which then extended from Orini in Matangi on the east side of the river and embracing Frankton. Horotiu. Rukuhia and Koromatua on the west, lie maintained regular services throughout his wide district (now divided into three self-supporting and one assisted charges . sometimes having four and at times five services on Sunday . At the same time he pursued his studies for the ministry, and upon their completion the charge was raised in status, and Mr Adams was called, ordained and inducted as minister. Services in Bouth The strenuous work, however, told Its tala, and after a ministry extending to 1910 Mr Adams’ health broke down and hp was advised to go to a colder climate. He resigned and. proceeding tn Otago, was for a period minister at Ranfurly. A rail to Chalmers Church, Dunedin, followed, but again he suffered impaired health. After a lengthy respite he was appointed to Wyndham, where he remained for a brief period, but his malady reasserting itself he was forced to retire permanently and he took up his residence at Oamaru, where he remained until his death. Deceased, whose memory is still revered by many in this district, was twice married. His first wife was Miss Soppett, of Hamilton, who died at Dunedin. His second wife survives him.
