RAGLAN KARIOI
The Raglan-Karioi branch of the Women’s Division held its monthly meeting In the Town Hall supperroom recently. There was a good attendance of members, the country section being the hostesses. During the afternoon Nurse Hooker (Plunket nurse) gave an Interesting address on infant welfare and the care of children. This was much appreciated by members, and a hearty vote of thanks was accorded her. Mrs V. E. Pegler, Raglan dental clinic secretary, stated that the Paddy's market held recently, organised by the Women’s Division and school committee, had been responsible for raising a sum of £16 7s towards the total of £25 14s which is Raglan’s share towards the dental clinic building fund. Three pounds additional to this amount is in hand as a result of Division effort. Mrs Pegler said that Mrs Jack Wilson had donated £1 towards Division funds, and members asked that she be given a vote of thanks for her generous donation, and voted that 10s go to the community chest and 10s to the dental clinic fund. Mrs Earl has offered to arrange a five hundred and bridge evening on Thursday, May 19, and members’ help was requested. This is an effort to raise the extra money for the dental clinic building fund. Mrs Earl was accorded a vote of thanks. At the June meeting of the Division the dental nurse will give a talk. PUTARURU BRANCH ANNUAL MEETING HELD There was a large attendance of members of the Putaruru branch of the Women's Division of the Farmers’ | Union at the annual meeting held at | Putaruru recently. Mrs J. C. Tomalin, president, was in the chair. I It was decided to hold a card evenI ing at an early date- Members also ' j decided that more seating accommoi dation was required for the meetingroom. The matter was left in the ’ hands of the president and secretary. A hearty vote .of appreciation was accorded Mrs L. Hooper for her many ' kindnesses to Hie Division during the year. The annual reports were read and • adopted. The president’s report and the financial statement from the treasurer showed that the Putaruru 1 branch was progressing very favour- ' ably. The report from the advisory ! committee reminded members that good work was being carried on in 1 the housekeeping branch of the Division. The flower show held by the gardening circle was a splendid success. The election of officers resulted: — President, Mrs J. G. Tomalin; secretary, Mrs E. W. R. Leslie; treasurer, Mrs E. Jones; vice-presidents, Mesdames G. E. Walsh, V. Drummond, W. McKinnon, E. J. Callaghan; advisory members, Mesdames L. Addenbroke and G. G. Penvvard; committee, Mesdames J. E. Duxfleld, G. C. Ranger, D. D. Sneddon, F. A. Ruthe and
N. Potter; exchange stall, Mrs H. Baldwin and junior members; press, Mrs W. Campbell. The president presented prizes woa during the year as follows: Mrs G. C. Ranger 1, Mrs J- C. Tomalin 2. la the junior section Miss Joan Karl gained first place, with Miss Rose Whyte only one point behind. In the gardening circle competition, Mis G. C. Ranger and Mrs J. C. Tomallne were first and second respectively. Hostesses for the afternoon tea were Mesdames C. E. Walsh, A. Tervitt and E. Nicklin. MORRINSVILLE BRANCH NINTH BIRTHDAY SOCIAL The ninth birthday of the Morrin*-* ville branch of the Women’s Division of the Farmers’ Union was celebrated with a social afternoon in the Masonic Hall, which was filled. Visitois from the Tahuna, Te Puninga, Tatuanui, Tauhei and Patetonga branch* s were present. Two new member >, Mrs Cook and Mrs Semmens, wei© welcomed. Resolutions of sympathy were passed to Mrs Devlyn, Mrs McAlpine and Miss A. Seales, who have suffered bereavements. Mrs E. H. Hutchings, a past president of the branch, wa» welcomed back after a period of Illness which had prevented her attending meetings for some months. The entertainment programme arranged by Mrs F- H. Stretton mi much enjoyed. Pianoforte solos were given by Miss E. Holt, of Kiwitahi; two humorous elocutionary items were contributed by Miss A. Crow, of Tauhei; and little Avis Frampton, of Piako, danced two Highland dances. The accompaniments were played by Mrs E. Keatinge. A very amusing sketch, “In the Doctor’s Waiting Room,” was presented by Mrs Gale and Miss A. Ferguson, of Motumaoho; Mrs J. J. Seales sang with accompanl- | ments by Mrs L. E. Pole,.and further items were given by Miss D. Bennett. A voice competition, In which the audience had to name those speaking from behind a curtain, was won by Mrs Bennett after a tie with Mrs Saxon and Miss Holt. The member* behind the curtain were Mesdames Jenner, Barrowclough, J. West, Gallichan, and Misses B. Cunnnlngham and D. Bennett. The branch’s birthday cake, which had been given by Miss M. Turnwald, was ornamented with nine! candles. These were lit by the president, Mrs R. A. S. Browne, and blown out by Miss Turnbull. Opportunity wus taken to present shoulder sprays o Miss Turnbull, and also to Mrs J. West, who was responsible for tl e decorations of the hall, which were carried out In the Division colours. Afternoon tea was served by members. Good business was done at the stall under the supervision of Mrs P. J. Cooper, and the library of. which Miss Turnbull Is in charge was also well patronised. A vole of thanks was passed to Mrs W. Smith for making the Women’s Division wreath for the Anzac Day ceremony. A letter of congratulation Is to b« sent to Mrs S. R. Ellis, formerly Min J. Laurenson, a member of tl e branch, who is going to live at Ohaupo. Gifts of magazines and books fron Mrs J. B. Laurenson and Mrs R Hyndman were acknowledged. The housekeeping secretary’s roj port for the year was read and show«ed that 24 applications for housekeepers were filled during the pa twelve months, which is an indication how much the housekeeping sen . e offered by the Division is appreciated in the district.
