WAIKATO EAST FEDERATION
ANNUAL COUNCIL MEETING The annual council meeting of the Waikato East Federation of the Women's Institute was held in the Matamata Town llall recently when there was a good gathering of members, the following being on the platform: Mrs Davidson (To Hoi president); Mrs E. L. Robinson (liinuera corresponding secretary) ; Mrs Burgess (Lichfield minute secretary). Proceedings opened with the singing of the Institute song, “Ode to Friendship.” Mrs Davidson welcomed delegates and members, expressing her pleasure at the co-operation accorded her and executive members during the year. The president also thanked the executive for the keen interest they had shown. Mrs D. Gunn (Waharoa), presented Mrs Davidson with a beautiful posy and bowl. During the year a very successful drama festival had been staged and much enthusiasm shown. Various Women's Institutes had exhibited courts in the Agricultural and Pastoral shows at Matamata, Te Aroha, and Hamilton. The work of the Institute had been consolidated. The financial statement was read by Mrs Schofield (treasurer), showing a credit balance of £l4 19s lOd. The finances were in a healthy position. Mrs Barker, voluntary organiser for the federation, in her report stated that the Institute covered ground from Walton and Springdale to Mamaku and Taupo, a distance of 120 miles. She had travelled GBO miles visiting the different Institutes. Both the president and the organiser had visited the Taupo and Mokai Institutes. Votes of thanks and appreciation were accorded the secretaries and the treasurer. A roll call disclosed delegates from the following institutes: Hinuera, Kereone, Lichfield, Manawaru, Mamaku, Matamata, Piarcre, Putaruru, Springdale, Taihoa, Te Poi, Te Aroha, Turanga-o-moana, Waharoa, Wuitoa, Walton and Wardviiie. A remit suggesting that the annual subscription to Institutes be raised from 2s to 3s was carried. General discussion took place on the topics of life-saving and resuscitation. Kereone Institute and other institutes asked members to follow their example in having demonstrations with a view to members qualifying in these two important branches. The drama festival for 1938, designs for show
courts, W.E.A. lectures and Women’s Institute finance were also discussed. Election of Officers The election of officers resulted as follows: President, Mrs Davidson (unopposed) ; executive, Mesdames Burns (Waharoa), Burgess (Lichfield), Davidson (Te Poi), Given (Walton), Gunn (Waharoa), Hurliman (Manawaru), Robinson (Ilinuera), Schofield (Matamata), Stewart (Matamata). After luncheon, served by members of the Te Poi Institute, Mrs Davidson Introduced and presented a posy to Miss Briar Gardner, of Auckland, who gave a delightful address on potter*. Miss Gardner has long, practical experience in this art, and he* version of the growth of the craft as it Is expressed to-day, together with a very beautiful display of her work was much enjoyed. At the conclusion, Mrs Gunn, of Waharoa, expressed the thanks of those present to Miss Gardner. A book was presented by Mrs Davidson .to Mrs C. Barker who is leaving Wardville for Hamilton. Mrs Barker’s departure was much regretted. The results of two competitions were: Bowl of flowers, Mrs Ranger (Lichfield) 1. Mrs Addenbrooke (Putaruru) 2; child’s party cake, Mrs Carseldine (Waharoa) 1, Mrs Young (Lichfield) 2, Mrs Ranger (Lichfield) 3. Mrs Powell sang two songs which were much enjoyed, Mrs Daniel being the accompanist. At the conclusion votes of thanks were passed to the president and to those who had helped to make the annual meeting such a success. The singing of the National Anthem brought proceedings to a close. AT HOROTIU The monthly meeting of the Horotiu branch of the Women’s Institute was held recently in the Horotiu hall. The president, Mrs McConnell, presided over a fair attendance of members. Three new members were enrolled and welcomed into the Institute. Mrs Bartley, who will shortly leave the district, was presented with a of esteem by the members. An invitation was received from the Whatawhata Women’s Institute to attend their birthday on May 12. Final arrangements /Were made regarding the branch's birthday party to be held in the Horotiu hall on June 11. Mrs Bath offered to make the birthday cake. The roll call for the month was “A Kitchen Hint.” it was well responded to and many useful hints were forthcoming. A novel knitting competition was held lliis month. Mrs White secured first prize and Mrs Bath second. Afternoon tea served by the hostesses for the month, Mesdames Begbie, Coker, Grantham and Coker brought a successful meeting to a close.
MANGAITI BRANCH The monthly meeting of the Mangaiti branch of the Women’s Division was presided over by Mrs McLaren. A competition arranged by Mrs Hooper, was won by Miss McCormick, and a guessing competition Jjv Mrs Collins. A demonstration on smocking was given by Mrs Campbell. The hostesses for the afternoon were Mesdames Johnson and Walsh. TAHUNA BRANCH The monthly meeting of the Tahuna branch of the Women’s Division was hejd recently in the local hall. The president. Mrs Walton, was in the chair, and there was a fair attendance of members. Invitations to the birthdays of the Te Hoe Women’s Institute, the Patetonga Women’s Institute, and the Morrinsville branch of the Wojncn's Division were read. The resignation of the treasurer, Mrs Cordon was received with regret and Mrs Irwin Major was appointed in her place. During the afternoon two competitions and a short community sing were held, Mrs Scott being the accompanist. A worked apron, donated by Mrs Williams, was sold to augment the funds. The hostesses for the afternoon were Mrs Peake and Miss E. Hopper. AT NQARUAWAHIA SUCCESSFUL DANCE A very enjoyable and successful dance was held in the Parish Hall recently by the members of the Xgaruawahia branch of the Women's Institute, the proceeds to enable a delegate to attend the annual conference. Excellent dance music was supplied by Mr W. Rogers, and Mr T. Stubbings was M.C. Novelty waltzes were won by Miss June Loughnan and Corp. Topsail, and Miss M. Dooley and Mr McLaren.
