THREE CENTURIES

4.30 O’CLOCK EDITION

AUSTRALIAN CRICKETERS CHIPPERFIELD'S BRIGHT DIBPLAV T>r MPSTER‘S SECOND INNINGS (United Pres* Assn.—Elec. Tel. Copyright) (Received May 10, 3.15 p.m.) LONDON, May 9. The Australian cricketers again demonstrated their strength a-s a batting side when their match against Leicestershire was continued to-day. Altogether three centuries were scored by tlie * >iton and the innings was declared closed at the huge total of 590 for five wickets. When stumps were drawn on Saturday Australia had scored 2-43 for two wickets in reply to Leicestershire’s first innings total of 212 and after declaring at 590 they had dismissed five of the county batsmen in their second innings for 107 runs. Dempster, the ex-New Zealander, and captain of the side was undefeated at stumps with 50 runs to his credit.

The weather was milder and more pleasant when the match was resumed, but later became misty. Fmoke from an adjoining power station blowing across the ground caused lome inconvenience to Badcock and lassett, whom the county could •OuM neither bowl nor smoke out. Careless Run Out The batsmen were responsible for a partnership of 300 In 190 minuter, the highest of the tour. Badcock punished the short bowling and Hassett hit freely all round the wicket. The latter was run out through carelessness In beginning an over-late run for what otherwise would have been & comfortable single. Hassett hit 18 fours and one six. and was sound, versatile and forcibleBadcock was out in the last over before lunch, being splendidly caught low down In the gully by Dempster. Badcock was In for 299 minutes and gave a solid, chanceless display, with frequent interludes of brilliance. He hit a six and 26 fours. Chipperfleld and Waite carried on brightly after lunch until Waite was caught in the slips. The 500 came up after only 360 minutes batting. Chipperfleld reached hts century in 145 minutes with 13 fours. He gave chances at 28 and 76. Barnett played a rather scratchy innings, and Australia declared at the tea adjournment. The innings lasted for 415 binutes. McCormick Again No-Balled McCormick opened the attack In Leicester’s second innings, and was twice no-balled In the second over, raising his total no-balls for the tour to 51.

Prentice and Berry opened confidently, but when the total was 30 Berry was brilliantly caught at point, and Armstrong was out first ball. Dempster walked right into the next ball and was struck on the arm. He ■seemed unable to use his feet and took strike to the following ball well In front of the normal crease. McCormick struck Prentice under the right armpit in the next over, the batsman remaining stockstill at the crease and not attempting a stroke. McCormick was taken off after six overs. . O’Reilly had Prentice caught In his leg trap and then had Dempster on edge, though the New Zealander dealt firmly with anything loose. McCormick returned at 92 with a fast over, one delivery flying over Dempster's head. He was twice no-balled in his eighth over. Dempster then hooked one to the Jenee and reached 50 in 85 minutesMcCormick’s Hostile Bowling The Australian Associated Press representative says that more important than the prospect of another crushing success is the feeling that McCormick Is at last laying the no-ball bogey, showinc in the progress, a glimmer of hi* Australian form. Delivering only five no-balls In nine overs to-day. McCormick progressed from conscientiousness to real hostility, taking three valuable wickets.
