ACROSS THE CENTRAL PACIFIO LINE OF SEAPLANE BASES United Press Assn.—Elec. Tel. Copyngn NEW YORK, May 9 America's western defences are being developed along a 5000-mile line cutting 'rom north to south across the Central Pacific and "anchored” by five islands, says the Washington correspondent of the New York Herald-Tribune. These outposts represent defence “eyes” rather than strongholds. The general programme proposes seaplane bases starting in the north at Dutch Harbour, in Unalaska, at the eastern end of the Aleutian Islands, and at Kodiak Island. The line, for which patrol aeroplanes will he responsible, runs thence south for 100 U miles to Midway Island; thence south-west lor IUOU miles to Wake Island; thence 1800 miles southeast to Canton island; and thence south 700 miles to Pago Pago. Active naval work at Midway Island lias also been ordered, and similar work is to he done at Wake Island later. With good landing harbours equipped witlr powerful radio stations, patrol aeroplanes will be able to cover the long line cutting the Pacific and spot foreign naval movements in advance. Copyright, (Received May 10, 11 a.m.) LONDON, May 9 The Australian Associated Press says that although it is reported from Washington that an agreement has been reached concerning the Canton and Enderbury Islands British Government quarters say that they are still waiting the final acceptance by the United States of the British points. The report that Antarctic territories were included in the discussions is denied here, where it is stated that no dispute with America exists regardiug the Antarctic. £/Qs
