His masquerade ended when lie was charged with stealing £220 from tlie Hammersmith l»'rm which had him. Known to clubmen as “Carnation Charlie,” Allen strolled through the West End at night with his wallet full of banknotes, lie posed in Mayfair and the Champs Elysees, Paris, as Colonel Sir Charles Allen- He stayed at expensive hotels, spent week-ends at the home of a wealthy West End club proprietor, entertained dance hostesses and gave parties. Allen toid. with smiles, of his experiences as a “Digger.” He went to Paris in March and wrote to his employers saving he was leaving for Brisbane, and planned to work 11 is passage, lie went to Ross. Hereford, where his father is master of fox hounds, said farewell to his parents and was arrested as he was leaving the house, lie asked in Court that a total of £15,000 be taken into account. The police stated that Allen went to Australia in 1912. served in the war, returned to England in 193') and was to have sent for his wife and child when he obtained good employment. The manager of a Regent street club stated that Allen thought nothing of giving a waiter a £lO tip. and brought beautiful women to the club, iuue of whom was* titled.
