“EUREKA” STUD PEDIGREE PLUS PRODUCTION This Pedigree Stud Farm, situated at Eureka, some twelve miles from Hamilton, on well-grassed paddocks, sheltered by trim hedges, breeds Tamworth pigs under real open-air conditions. On his 210 acres, Mr Jones carries about 146 head of cattle, milking some 80 cows. The Tamworth stud was established in 1933, from stock from well-known and successful breeders; Mr Chilcott’s sow from Lucernedale Legacy, and a boar from Mr L. F. Barry being the chief founders. An outstanding sow in this stud is Te Rapa Beth 53rd who had four litters averaging from 47 to 51 lbs. at eight weeks. The breeding stock is selected from this proved sow, pigs not able to produce an average of 40 lb. at 8 weeks have been culled out. Mr Jones has been, a member of the Waikato Pig Recording Club for the past four years and has acted under their advice, when selecting fresh blood for his stud. Although this stud does not show excessively, Mr Jones has collected a prize every time he has been in the show ring with one of his Tamworths. The stud was fortunate to acquire Burleigh Lucky Star, by Warringal Lucky Star (imp.) from Lucernedale Choice, for its herd sire. This boar sired the litter that won the light pork, pork, and bacon classes at the 1938 Cambridge Show both on the hoof and on the hooks. This is a meritorious performance and Mr Jones spared no expense to secure this sire for his stud. Since the new grade regulations have come into force it is imperative to breed to this type of pig. The stud will have young pigs for sale next season from this proved sire. MATANGI STUD BERKSHIRES HEALTH AND CONSTITUTION At the Matangi Pedigree Stud Mr Bourke breeds quality Berkshire Sigs. The whole stud is under his personal supervision and management. reeding under natural open-air conditions ensures the health and constitution of these pigs, which has built up the solid reputation of their early maturity, type, constitution and production. Several progeny of Sunbeam Greenbank will be offered in our entry of 50 pigs at the pedigree pig sale to be held at Hamilton on July 13th and 14th. Young sows of outstanding quality are a feature of this year's offering. These sows have been mated with a beautiful son of Brampton Rambler (imp.), Te Rapa Felix 10th, whose progeny are proving to be very typey and possessing good bacon proclivities, which are at present in very high demand. The Matangi Stud is founded with prominent progeny of imported blood from Canadian sows carefully chosen for exceptional type as foundation matrons of the stud. Young boars to be offered show the utility advantages of modern Berkshires, commanding the popularity for breeders seeking pigs of greater length, fine shoulder, and particularly good quality hams, thus incidentally producing the type of pig commercially successful in meeting the modem requirements of both pork and bacon producers. “LARGE WHITE” STUD CANDY BROS., PROPRIETORS Hillcroft Stud is to be found at Pokuru. a few miles from Te Awamutu, where Champion Large White Pedigree Pigs are bred in real out-door conditions. This Stud was founded in 1932 by Messrs. Candy Brothers, who have gained outstanding success in the show rings of New Zealand. To keep up the policy of their Stud—“ Type plus Utility”—Candy Brothers have imported both boars and sows of high standard and proven quality. The most ootstindiltC of these importations include:—Vaucluse Commodore 29th of pure English stock. This boar was selected by the Department of Agriculture in Victoria for the “Better Farming Train.” and was then exhibited at the Royal Show. Melbourne, 1934, where he collected first prize for boars under ten months, and was pronounced one of the best exhibits of young boar- ever seen at a Royal Show in Melbourne. Since coming to Hillcroft. Vaucluse Commodore 29th has won first prizes and championships in nearly every show ring in the North Island of New Zealand. Another boar imported in September, 1936, Vaucluse Bradbury 22nd, was exhibited at the 1937 Waikato Show and was awarded first prize in the under fourteen months’ class, and has developed into a very fine boar. The sow, Vaucluse Valencia 68th, was also imported to this stud and has also gained many prizes. She farrowed her first litter of fourteen pigs in October, 1935; her second litter of nineteen pigs in April, 1936, and her third litter of seventeen pigs in September. 1936. Two daughters of this fine sow. Hillcroft Valencia fourth and fifth were placed first and second in the Waikato Show, 1936. and have since farrowed nine and eleven pigs respectively to the imported boar Vaucluse Bradbury 22nd. Hillcroft Stud has «o ihips, 3 reserve championships, 17 Ist prizes, 5 2nd, and 5 3rd prizes in two seasons. These figures definitely prove the high quality of the stock bred at this stud.
