PROLIFICACY AND TYPE “ WAIREKA” LARGE WHITES While the "Waireka” Stud of Large White pigs, the property of Mr G. D. Porritt, of Pukeroro, Cambridge, has made a name for itself in the show ring it is chiefly because of its great prolificacy that the stud commends itself to breeders. Breeders will remember that for the first time in the history of the pig industry in the Dominion a ton litter was produced in the Waikato, this being the achievement of a “ Waireka” sow at the home of the stud. The ton litter was typical of the prolificacy of these great Large Whites and provided one indication that the stud could more than substantially support its show ring successes. At the 1934 Auckland Show, with five entries, the “ Waireka” Stud secured three first prizes, two second prizes and two reserve championships, only one of the entries being a mature pig. The “ Waireka” Stud is run under ordinary farm conditions and a feature of the management is that there is not a sty on the property. Living under open-air conditions and with plenty of young grass available the pigs are always in perfect condition and are a tribute to the owner’s system of management. The chief boar at present in use is Taradale David, a boar which is leaving ideal stock, his progeny being low set with beautiful hams. This stud gained first prize in the special class for confirmation in the Tomoana-Moose Porker competition. The “Waireka” Stud is truly a great advertisement for the Large White breed. THE GLENORKNEY STUD OUTSTANDING PEDIGREE STOCK On one of the most progressive studs in the Dominion, the Glenorkney Stud of Mr A. .T. Swanney of Whatawhata is noted for the type and commercial quality of its pedigree stock. There are individual members of it 3 stud which would be very hard to beat in any company. The commercial quality of the stock has been conclusively proved by tests conducted at Smithfield. Mr Swanney is a newcomer to the Waikato, coming from Taranaki, where he was farming for 10 years. On the 57 acres of wellwatered and well-sheltered paddocks the stud is breeding its pedigree Tamwerths under natural farm conditions. Each individual pig is identified with its recorded weights entered on the sheets. Litters of all the sows have been recorded this year. The stud matron, Burwen Nancy, has again put up some phenomenal figures. Of 12 pigs weaned in one litter the weights were 124 lbs. at 3 weeks, and 451 lbs. at 8 weeks, averaging 10.83 lbs. at 3 weeks and 39.08 lbs. at 8 weeks. Two other litters, one of six pigs, and one of nine pigs, averaged 42 lbs. at 8 weeks. These figures prove the policy of the stud—to produce only well-fed and good constitutioned breeding stock. » PROGRESSIVE PIG-KEEPING MODERN METHODS EMPLOYED Looking down from the heights on Mr Geo. Jamieson’s well-lald-out pig breeding establishment at Horotiu, the casual observer has immediate proof that here is a vindication of modem methods of pig keeping. Draughtproof houses situated in small well-grassed paddocks provide an initial indication of Mr Jamieson’s progressive policy and a closer examination of his healthy Tamworths and Berkshires proves conclusively that his methods have been attended with the greatest success. Mr Jamieson’s establishment is unique in that it differs materially from other Waikato pig plants as far as feeding is concerned. The pigs on the property, which, by the way, is particularly well-sheltered, are fed on boiled-down foodstuffs and Mr Jamison is emphatic that in the boiling-down process all germs are killed. A short examination of the 300 pedigree pigs on the property is proof conclusive of Mr Jamieson’s contentions. The Pukete Stud was founded with two sows in 1915 and has been brought up to its present high standard by herd culling, combined with practical knowledge. The herd carries all the very best blood that it has been possible to procure and no expense has been spared to improve the quality of the herd. Mr Jamieson has recently imported from Canada two r m , Berkshire sows, litter sisters hv Highclere Rival from Woodburn Rosa \ Woodburn Rosa Bella -?1P. and Woodburn Rosa Bella 23P. Two maiden c;ws bred at the stud have just been selected by the Department of Agriculture to b* sent to the South Australian Government. This indica*r:> the very high standard Pukete pigs have attained. Mr Jamison’s Stud (Pukete) is purely a breeding establishment and this year's offering surpasses anything previously offered. An inspection of this stud at Horotiu will repay every breeder,
