House Renovation
With the prospect of unsettled weather in the near future, it is advisable to place shelters in good repair. While carrying out this work there are many points which are necessary in the making of a structure. The ideal house to use in conjunction with pasture is one mounted on skids, making it possible to turn it back on to the weather. One side should be left completely open for penetration of both fresh air and sunshine, two of the most vital factors in promoting good health. One point which is often overlooked in pig houses is the method of weather boarding in the same manner as in house building. This in the opinion of all health authorities is far from sanitary, for every board forms a ledge which is nothing better than a dust trap, and it is in the dust that we find lice and many other parasites, as well as disease germs, which are a constant source of worry to the careful farmer. Weather boarding should be vertical and this necessitates the covering of all joins with slats to prevent draughts. Flooring should be of at least one inch timber. Roofing must be of durable material, while at the same time it must be a *onconductor of heat. The most useful roofing is to cover the house with boards, or wire-netting and building paper prior to using corrugated iron. This covering is durable and has the advantage that it tends to keep temperatures at a more even leveL
