May 8 Britain and the United States are approaching agreement regarding the status of Canton and Enderbury Islands, with the prospect of an arrangement for joint jurisdiction, says the Washington corespondent of the New York Times. It is expected that a formal announcement will he made soon of the general terms and that detailed supplementary and collateral questions will then be taken up. including the status
of other small islands in the Pacific, the" jurisdiction of which is open to question in view of the uncertainty surrounding their discovery. Eventually it is intended to carry on negotiations regarding the Antarctic area, later including other countries with interests in the areas under scrutiny.
