TWO FOR 243
AUSTRALIAN CRICKETERS 3AOCOCK NOT OUT 111 LEICESTER MAKES 212 RUNS United Press Assn.—Elec. Tel. Copyright LONDON, May 7 The Australian cricket team commenced a match against Leicestershire to-day in cold and dull weather. Winning the toss. i.h S. Dempster, the former New Zealand representative, who is captain of tlie county team, took advantage of a good wicket and a fast outfield. Leicester compiled 2 12 in its first innings and the Australians replied with 243 for two wickets. Bradman. Fleet wood-Smith, Walker and Barnes were omitted from the touring team. With Badcock enrolled as the fifth
century-maker and apparently time alone preventing Hassett from getting another three-figure score, the Australians are well on their way to a third victory. While Australia's outcricket was good enough to dismiss Leicester fairly cheaply, it was less impressive than the side’s batting. McCormick, who brought his total no-balls for the tour to date to 49, would not have secured Ids three wickets against sounder batting. Dempster was uncomfortable when facing the Australian fast bowler, who made the ball rise sharply. Berry Btruck by Ball Early in the game a delivery from McCormick struck Berry on the side of the head. He had to be assisted from the field, but resumed after lunch. McCormick, in his third over, struck Dempster on the leg and the crowd shouted for the bowler to be taken off. In the same over a ball struck Dempster on the wrist, causing him to drop his bat. He continued batting, hut was bowled next ball, a good length delivery taking the bails. Dempster apparently expected a shorter delivery. A section of the crowd continued to barrack when McCormick's deliveries struck the batsmen, but his bowling did not resemble leg theory and could not be taken as contrary to the spirit of the game. Leicester’s innings lasted 170 minutes, and then Finglcton, Badcock and Hassett commenced to 'subdue the county attack. Badcock was aggressive throughout and was seldom troubled. Hasson's Fine Exhibition Hassett, who is proving the batting discovery of the tour, gave a delightful exhibition, revealing a wide range of strokes. His footwork was brilliant. With the exception of one lofty hit to fine leg, his display was chanceless. Copyright (Received May 9, 1 p.m.) LONDON. May 8 Howard Marshall, in the Daily Telegraph, says:— "We will do cricket a dis-service if we magnify McCormick's no-balls into something sensational. His bowling is short, in part due to run-up difficulties. I hope it won t lead to any nonsense about bodylinc. Australian victories over Worcester and Oxford arc not significant. 1 h;.\vo seen nofhine to make me fear the Australians unduly."
