London Apple Market.—The demand for apples remains steady in London and prices are firm.

Belgian OXOllBlB’ Sucoeas. —The Belgian cyclists Buysse and Billiet won a six-day cycle race, covering a distance of 1950.4 miles, says a message from London.

Reoord Membership. —Record membership figures from the Y.M.C.A. and Y.W.C.A. at New Plymouth have brought the number of members to well over 900.

Film Actress Claims £60,000. —Miss Gaye Melton, an actress in Hollywood, is suing William Koenig, a Metro-Goldwyn-Mayer executive, for £50,000, alleging breach of promise of marriage.

Fine For Speeding.—Colin Thomas Munro was fined £1 and 13s costs when he was convicted by Mr S. L. Paterson, S.M., in the Magistrate's Court, Hamilton, to-day, for speeding in a motoi*-car.

No Warrant of Fitness.—For driving a motor vehicle without a warrant of fitness, John David Todd was convicted and fined £1 by Mr S. L. Paterson, S.M., in the Magistrate's Court, Hamilton, to-day.

Plunket Appeal.—A Dominion-wide appeal was broadcast by Her Excellency Viscountess Galway on Saturday from station IYA in opening a campaign which is being conducted this week to increase subscribing members of the Plunket Society throughout New Zealand.

Drama School at Palmerston.—A school of drama organised by the Manawatu area of the British Drama League was held in Palmerston North during the week-end. The staff for the sessions comprised Mrs Victor Lloyd, of Wellington, producer for the Wellington Thespians, and Mr Myles Wright, stage manager for the Thespians for many years. Homes for Indigent.—“lt Is a strange thing these days when there Is a cry of prosperity everywhere that our homes for indigent men are packed to the doors,” remarked Lieutenant-Com-missioner F. Adams, divisional commander of the Salvation Army, during an address in Hamilton yesterday. Mr Adams said additions had been made to the homes but all were still filled.

Salvation Army Jubilee. —Widespread interest was evinced in the special meetings held yesterday by the Hamilton Corps of the Salvation Army during the celebration of the fiftieth anniversary of the corps’ foundation. Both the morning and evening services were attended by a large number of members, while at the puolic meeting in the afternoon the hall was crowded.

License Endorsed.—The endorsement of his driver’s license until May 31, 1939, and a flne of £3 was the penalty imposed on J. F. Duck, of Ngaruawahia, when he was convicted in the Magistrate’s Court, Hamilton, to-day, by Mr S. L. Paterson, S.M-, for riding a motor-cycle at a dangerous speed. For not having a silencer on his machine, defendant w’as fined 10s and 12s costs.

Oranges Deteriorate. — Part of a cargo of oranges and bananas consigned to the Internal Marketing Department arrived at Wellington on Saturday by special goods train from Auckland and some of the oranges were found to show signs of w*aste. The oranges were sold at from 7s 6d to 12s per bushel and a half case accounts, and retailers sold them at considerably reduced prices.

A Minute Minute-Book.—“Is that the minute-book?” asked the Chief Justice, Sir Michael Myers, In the Supreme Court, Hamilton, to-day, when a small note-book was produced in the course of a company civil action. “It certainly is a very minute book,” he added, when told that It w’as. “And the entries are even more minute, Your Honour,” commented counsel for plaintiff, Mr II- E. Barrowclough.

Crew Refuses to Sail.—Owing to a dispute regarding payment for Sunday work, the crew of the Union Company's coastal steamer Kaimiro refused to take the vessel to sea on Saturday* The claim was made by the men that they should have received double pay for a recent Sunday sailing from Westport. Only ordinary lime was allowed, as the company held that as Westport was a bar harbour —from which movements cannot always be’ kept to schedule—this rate for Sunday departures was provided in the award.

Canoe with a History.—The old canoe which carried the body of Tumate Mahut-a down the river to the Taupiri burial ground yesterday afternoon w’as chosen because it has been connected with the Waikato peoples through many troublesome days. On one occasion Major von Tempsky endeavoured to destroy it, and in the Maori mind it was linked with the events which resulted in the confiscation of tribal lands. It was in the settlement of the long dispute between the Waikato tribes and the various Governments of New Zealand that the late Tumate Mahuta played such a prominent part, and therefore it was most fitting that his body should be conveyed to Taupiri in the historic canoe.
