FABIAN CLUB FORMED
ACTIVITIES AT CAMBRIDGE MALDISTRIBUTION OF WEALTH (Special t.o Times.) CAMBRIDGE, Monday. A Fabian Club has been launched here under the auspices of the Matamata Fabian Club. The Matamata president, Mr Woodcock, took the j chair at. the opening meeting. The . Rev. H. Daniel, also of Matamata, gave ; an interesting address on "The Mod- : ern Application of the Social Prin- ' ciples of Christianity.”
i Mr Daniel stressed that we were ■ living in an age in which scientific development had far out-stripped { other phases of man’s life. The last : depression had amply demonstrated that while man's productive resources were sufficient, the methods of dis- | tribution had broken down. A conserj vative estimate placed the number of i the world's unemployed at 25,000,I 000. which meant that at least 100,- | 000,000 were living under conditions jof malnutrition and semi-starvation, i In Great Britain 85 per cent of the | wealth was appropriated by only 3 ! per cent of the people, leaving the , remaining 15 per cent to be divided i among 97 per cent.
I The solution, he contended, lay In j co-operation on the basis of brother- • hood and the principles of Christian- ! ity. He pointed to Russia, at whose ! borders the woifd depression stopped, 'as an example of what could be ! achieved by co-operation even on a ! materialistic basis. I A general and animated discussion followed. I The following officers were elected: . President, Mr James, of Maungataujtari; lion, secretary-treasurer, Mrs Meakin; committee, Miss D. Hall and Messrs Schweiters and Meakin.
