Copyright (Received May 7, 9.40 a.m. LONDON, May 6 The Lichfield by-election, owing to the death of Mr J. A. Lovat-Fraser, resulted:— Mr G. Poole (Labour .... 23,586 Mr G. Craddock (NationalLiberal) 22,760 This is a Labour gain. The Australian Associated Press says that Lichfield, following Ipswich and West Fulham, constitutes the third successive Labour gain in byelections from the Government, but the majorities are regarded as insufficient to indicate a decided swing from the Government ranks. Nevertheless, the Government has decided to intensify its campaigning in by-elections, as instanced by the recent removal of the ban* against members of the Cabinet speaking in them.
