Victor Christian William Cavendish, born on May 31, ISGB, was the greatest landowner in England, and a former Governor of Canada. He entered the House of Commons in 1891 as Lib-eral-Unionist member for West Derbyshire, retaining the seat until lie succeeded to the title. From 1900 to 1903 lie was Treasurer of the King's

Household and for the two following years Fiuancial Secretary to the Treasury. In 1015 he was made a Civil Lord of the Admiralty and a year later accepted the Governor-Generalship of Canada, his term of office ending In 1921. He was Secretary for the Colonies from 1922 until 1924. The Duke owned about 186,000 acres of mineral lands in Derbyshire alone. Before the war his property included the famous Devonshire House in Piccadilly, London, but. apparently under the stress of post-war taxation. he parted with it and its site is now covered with great blocks of flats. The Duke married in 1892 Lady Evelyn Emily Fitzmaurice, a daughter of the fifth Marquis of Lansdowne, and they had two sons and five daughters. His eldest son and heir is the Marquess of Ilartington, Under-Sec-ret.u-y of State for the Dominions.
