AMATEUR CYCLING
THI HAMILTON OLUB ROAD SEASON OPENED (By “Freewheel.”) Under ideal weather conditions, the Hamilton Amateur Sports Club opened its 1938 rend cycling season with a 10-mile race to Tamahere and back. A fine field of 18 starters assembled and it was pleasing to note that' of this number eleven were juniors. The junior contingent provided the winner in Hoy Shaw, who. having his first •start on the road, put up a grand performance to head R. Latta in the sprint. Bert is an old hand and lie should show to advantage over a longer distance. N. Fensom, another junior, went well to gain third position. but he had no chance with the first two. Fastest time honours went to Bob Shaw, who has just reached senior status. He has always been a consistent performer, and should do well in open company this season. Surprise of the Day The surprise of the day was provided by the junior, J. Rogerson. Riding from the 2.30 mark, Jack worked hard all th*> way and finished with a great hurst of speed, but could not quite head off Shaw for time honours, it will be noted with regret that this popular young rider is in hospital, and will not be competing for some time. S. Leong, also from the 2.30 mark, hung on to Shaw and Rogerson well, but was not quite fit enough to stay the full journey with them, and he was dropped at Hinton’s cully coming home. C. Scott, from 3 30. also rode well.but appeared to tire toward the end of the race. However, a few weeks' training will remedy that. c. Burr and R .Forsyth were expected to fight "u! time honours but they appeared to lack the necessary training. wuri tne younger memDers putting lip such good performances, these riders will have to work hard to maintain their positions as scratch men.
