GOLF NOTES

PLAY AT ST. ANDREW'S SEASON IN FULL SWING GAMES THIS WEEK-END (By ’•Niblick.") The season at -St- Andrews links is now in full swing and for this time of the year the links are in exceptionally good order. With another week or two of closer cutting the fairways will be well covered with good grass. The greens have been very clean and contain good grass which has also very much improved since the recent rains and the regular cutting. The effect of the wet summers experienced during the last three years can be seen in the rough, which In some parts of the links is very heavy. The trees, however, have benefited considerably and many of the clumps are growing steadily, and are already very noticeable. The appearance of the links will be much improved in two or three years’ time. Increased Membership The membership has increased this season. While several old faces are missing, there have been more than enough new ones to take their places. The playing strength so far is weaker than usual, although some of the new members will be assets In this direction. The club will miss L. J. Bryant, who has gone back to Akarana, and C. B. Thomas, who Is also under notice of transfer. There Is a number of junior members who are improving and will in due time be able to take their places as representatives of the club. The two most promising juniors are, of course, R. A. Glading and G. i Seccombe. The latter lias improved very rapidly in recent rounds, and he will be a serious rival of his fellowassistant to the professional. Last Saturday week Seccombe carded a score of 73 which was accomplished as follows: —Out: 4,4, 4,4, 4,4, 4, 5, 3 —36. In: 4,4, 4,4, 2,5, 5,5, 4—37. Rose Bowl Competition To-day the third round of the St. Andrews Rose Bowl competition will be decided. This is an annual event in which the trophy will be held by the player who returns the best aggregate of two out of three bogeyhandicaps. A. M. Fahey appears likely to be the first winner, his cards of 2 down and all square being the best aggregate at present. There was a big reversal of form shown by most of the leaders in the first round when their cards were returned in the second round last Saturday.

The first Inter-olub match of the season takes place this week-end*-when a team from the Franklin association will visit St. Andrews. This has always been a popular fixture, and the local players may find their opponents too strong this year.
