SUCCESS IN ENGLAND ! CONCERTS, RADIO AND DRAMA Advice has been received from Denis Dnwlinc, the well-known Otago bari- • tone who is continuing his studies at, the Royal College of Music, London, that in recent months he lias been busily occupied with vncal engagements, and is making gratify ing progress with his studies. His outstanding college performance was the rendering of the operatic solo “Largo al FacFotum ” Rossini), ;to the accompaniment of the First i College Orchestra under the baton of | Dr. Sargent. Other operatic roles re- ! cently undertaken by him have been 1 Escamillo in “ Carmen,” Figaro in ; “ Marriage of Figaro " and Marcel in I “ Boheme.” As a result of the above i performance Mr Dowling had the distinction of being the only vocalist selected by the 8.13. C. for operatic broadcasts from the talent engaged in i these productions. Amongst many public engagements recently fulfilled by the singer were performances in “ Faust,” “ Tales of ' old Japan." and Handel's "Solomon Ncwbrouy," and other appearances as ! vocalist under Sir Adrian Boult and Dr. Vaughan Williams at provincial must- ' cal fcslivals. IPs most interesting recent work was in a series of recitals in Wales. By way of variety Mr, Dowling has j made several appearances in drama, , and a recent portrayal of Charles ‘ Surface in Sheridan's “ School for Scandal ” received very favourable mention by the press and critics. ‘
