CARNAL KNOWLEDGE CHARGE As a sequel to a “Maori marriage.’ George Eketone. Maori labourer, of Te Kauri, near Kawliia. was to-day charged, before the Chief Justice. Sir Michael Myers, in the Supreme Court. Hamilton, with the carnal knowledge of a Maori girl f i years of age Accused was represented by Mr J. F. Strang, and Mr .T. R. FIU-Gerald appeared for tlie Crown. In his address. Mr ftrang submitted a defence in law. contending that th* phrase “unlawful carnal knowledge” in the Act meant th** commission of the offence in guilty knowledge. The submission was over-ruled by His Honour, however, and after a short retirement a \erdict nf guilty, with a strong recommendation to mercy, was returned. Accused was remanded until Tuesday for sentence.
