RUGBY HONOURS
STAG SERIES TO-MORROW 1937 CHAMPION 3 AT THE PARK KEEN MATCH WITH CAMBRIDGE There will he plenty at stake to ! make the big Rugby attraction at | Rugby Park to-morrow a keen tussle, I when’the Stag Trophy series will coni tinue with the meeting: of Technical Old Boys and Cambridge. Technical were champions last season, but they have a loss in llio first game last Saturday to atone for. Opposed lo them will he the new Cambridge fifteen, which also Itas fo make up a leeway of an initial defeat. The town’s ! best team last year was easily the best combination on the first round of the Stag series last. year, and the material Is there to repeat the performance. It will be a grand encounter, which will play a big part in the first round of the 1938 competition. The match will be the major attraction at headquarters, and on the form displayed last week it appears as If It will develop into a duel between the Technical backs, who are a fine line, and the Cambridge forwards, who make a powerful pack, with devastating qualities in the loose. Therefore, the weather should play a big part tomorrow. Technical appear to have the better prospects, but if unfavourable weather is experienced the Cambridge pack might win. Old Boys' Chances If Old Boys can reap victory again to-morrow they will take place of honour in the Stag series with four points, which would establish a handy lead for the team early in the first round. To-morrow the fifteen will be away from Hamilton again, playing Rovers, at Te Awamutu. The prospects are for another victory to Old Boys, but here again a wet day might turn the scales in Rovers’ favour, as the Old Roys’ pack is perhaps not ns strong as will be the home vanguard. Taupiri. a team reported to be sfrong. will play its first match of the new season to-morrow, when Frank - ton will he their opponents, at Ngaruawahia. Th* Frankton team gave a fine display at Rugby Park last Saturday, and the back line should improve still further after the first match last week. Taupiri have shown definite promise in practice matches, however, although the team was unfortunate in losing a promising wing three-quarter, Halburt. who wss fatally injured in the first run. and O'Hearn, who fractured his arm in the second practice, will be out for several weeks.
There will be no Stag Trophy games at Cambridge this Saturday. The Senior B. grade competitions, which have been instituted by the Hamilton Rugby Union for the first time this season, will open to-morrow at Rugby Park, when two excellent games will be seen. The other lower grade competitions will open to-mor-row also.
