A GRAND FIGHT

NEW ZEALAND CRICKETERS KENT’S NARROW VICTORY MARGIN OF ONE WICKET v (From the Speoial Correspondent of the United Press Association with the team.) (Received Aug. 28, 3.15 p.m.) CANTERBURY, Aug. 27 The New Zealand cricketers were ill out for 300 in their second innings against Kent at Canterbury to-day after scoring 188 in their first. The county, who made 321 in its first knock required 166 to win, and obtained that number with nine wickets down, thus winning the match by one wicket. New Zealand made a grand fight when it seemed certain they would be beaten easily. Their cheap loss of the last four wickets left the county an easy looking task, especially when Kent, had 109 runs for two wickets at lunch. The' match seemed as good as New Zealand with brilliant bowling and fine fielding then captured seven wickets in an hour. Roberts bowled as accurately and venomously as he had ever done in England. His figures in a fine spell

of sustained effectiveness were, 11 overs, two maidens, 23 runs and four wickets. 'Cowie strove manfully bowling at top pace. <He took his 100th wicket on the tour. Faultless Fielding The New Zealand fielding was faultless. Roberts made a superhuman onehanded diving catch at first slip. Fourteen runs were required by Kent when the last two batsmen became associated. New Zealand might easily have won. Cowie almost bowled one batsman, who chopped hard down on the ball very late. The ball ran off and heavily struck the stumps but the bails miraculously remained in position. After this escape the last pair amid wild excitement, scored the winning runs.
