WOMEN’S INSTITUTE
AT TE UKU. I There was a good attendance at the monthly meeting of the Te Uku . Women’s Institute held in the Memorial Hall on August 19. Mrs Moore presiding. The meeting opened with the singing of the Institute song An appeal was read on behalf of the lepers | and £1 16s Id was handed in in : voluntary donations. Mrs Moore's competition was won by Mrs Featherstonhaugh. The Roll of Honour results were as follows: Bowl of Daffodils, Miss McDonald 1, Mrs J. H. Dent 2; scone's, Mrs Featherstonhaugh 1, Miss Mead 2. Afternoon tea was served by the hostesses, Mesdamcs Harding, Silcock and Misses Mead and Violet and Dorothy Bates. AT OTOROHANQA. There was an unusually large attendance at the August meeting of the Otorohanga Women's Institute presided over by the President, Mrs A. A. Smith. In the social half-hour competition Mesdames Still and MacDonald gainad equal points. Mrs A. Bell presided at the piano. In the competition for the best shortbread Mrs W. H. Holme's was the winner, Mrs Baikie being runnerup. Mesdames Larsen, Ke'hely, and King And Miss Miller were hostesses for the Afternoon—which opened with the “Ode to Friendship.” The President carried the golden thread. Several new members were enrolled. The singing of the National Anthem concluded a pleasant function.
AT NGARUAWAHIA. The' monthly meeting of the Ngaruawahia Women’s Institute was held in the Oddfellows’ Hall recently Mrs Loughnan presiding over a good attendance of members. It. was decided to assist the Borough Council to canvass the town for subscriptions for the Orphans’ Fund on September 3. Mesdames Burn and M. Prendergast were appointed delegates to the Taupiri Group meeting on August 25 and Mesdames Prendergast and Loughnan to represent the Institute at the Women’s Institute Federation bi-annual meeting. An invitation was read from the Te Kowhal Institute to their birthday on August 25. A competition was won by Mrs C. E. Wilson and for the best plate of scones Mrs Allwill was first with Mrs Loughnan second. A very interesting demonstration of beaten copper work was given by Miss N. Boord. Afternoon tea was served by the hostesses, Mesdames Wapp, Harrop, and Moir, who were also responsible for the afternoon’s programme. The meeting closed with the' singing of the National Anthem. AT ROTO-O-RANQI. The August meeting of the Roto-o-rangi Women’s Institute was held in the' school Mrs Wakefield presiding. After the singing of the Institute song and the reciting of Ine creed, considerable business was dealt with. Mrs H. Martin was responsible for the following motto: “Keep your face always toward the sunshine and the shadows will fall behind.” The roll call “Farmyard Calls” proved reminiscent. Mrs .1. Cooper has been ele'eted delegate to attend the Bi-annual Conference of the Waikato Federation of Women’s Institutes to be held in Hamilton. A competition arranged by Mrs L. Duncan who also presented the prize was won by Miss .leannle Reid. To an appreciative audience, Mrs J. Treloar of Hamilton gave an excellent demonstration of woodpulp creations. On exhibit were some exquisite examples of her work. Mrs Treloar was accorded a very hearty vote of thanks and presented with a bunch of violets and a spray. Mrs Treloar and Mrs C S. Shale Judged the following competitions in which the awards were as follows: Sponge' cake, Mrs J. Cooper i, Mrs Moreland 2, Mrs L. Duncan 3; Thrift article Mrs D. Dillon 1, Mrs L. Duncan 2, Mrs H. A. Begg 3. The hostesses who served afternoon tea were Mrs 11. W. Gampin. Mrs L. Duncan and Mrs D. Dillon. The singing of the National Anthem brought an enjoyable afternoon to a close. AT WHITIORA. The President of the Waikato Federation of Women’s Institutes, Mrs J. Ward Chapman founded a new Institute to be known as the Whitiora In--1 stitute, on Thursday afternoon. Mrs Warren was elected President after whic hshc was presented with a posy of violets and primroses by Mrs Chapman. The meetings will be held
on thef third Thursday of each month, at i. 30 p.m. in the Arawa Hall. When the business of the meeting had been dealt with the function took J the form of a social afternoon. A competition was won by Mrs Morley and a ring game' by Mrs Warren Afternoon tea was served. Mrs D. Gate presented Mrs Chapman with a crystal dish as a souvenir of the founding of the Institute, and the meeting closed with the singing of the National Anthem. AT EUREKA. The monthly meeting of the Eureka Women's Institute was held In the hall recently. Mrs Harris presiding over a fair attendance of members. The meeting opened with the reading of the creed after which correspondence was dealt with. An appeal for gifts of money for the lepers at Makogai was well received. The birthday celebrations postponed in May on account of paralysis restrictions will be held shortly in the form of a card evening and dance. The roll call “Uses of a lemon” was l well responded to, many useful hints being exchanged. The sales table reported fair business and Mrs Townsend was the winner of the hall competition. The competition, “Something ne'w from something old” brought forward many entries Mrs Harris’ rag mat gaining first prize and Mrs Ross Hinton’s child's frock being second. * Mrs Cyril Masters gave two very enjoyable piano solos during the afternoon. Mesdames C. Cress well and C. Masters were hostesses for the afternoon. The National Anthem closed a very enjoyable afternoon.
