GOLF NOTES
HAMILTON LADIES’ CLUB SOUTH AUCKLAND CHAMPIONSHIPS (By ‘‘All Square.”) The two finalists in tho Ellis Cup Championships played excellent golf I throughout the tournament. Miss J. i Duncan on a 5 mark qualified top with scores of 79 and 80. She met Mrs L. Day in the first round winning her match 4—3. Mrs Day was playing excellent golf but was not quite good enough to hold her opponent. In thei second round Miss Dunoan beat Mrs D. R. Foreman, who is on a 2 mark, 4—3. In the quarter final she probably had the hardest game of the tournament whe'n she met Mrs F. Mander the local club’s champion. Mrs Mander was out-driving her opponent at many holes and her approach work was more deadly but Miss Duncan kept to the fairway and was more accurate. In this match eleven holes were halved and Mrs Mander did well to take her opponent to the 12th hole for a decision. The other finalist, Miss V. Fleming, Is on a 2 mark, and considerably improved her play as the' tournament advanced. She came second in the qualifying round and had to play her best golf to heat Miss R. Stewart in the second round. These' two players produced nine “Birdies” between them In the first eleven holes, Miss Fleming going out In 36. In this round she had twelve 4's on her card for the first twelve holes which was surely a record. In her match against Mrs Ralph she played a similar round giving her opponent no chances. Miss M. Campbell did wonderfully well to reach the semi finals Miss Masters beating her club mate on the 18th green. The other semi-flnalist, Miss V. Campbell from Timaru, beat Miss N. Beverley 5—4. In the final of the Ellis Cup Miss V. Fleming's experience stood her in good stead and she won from Miss Duncan on the 16th green after being dormy 5. In the St. Andrews Cup final golf was not the best Miss Masters and Miss V. Campbell could produce but the game was very eve'n. Miss Masters was dormy two and halving the 18th won the match 1 up.
