Many Chinese officials called at the hospital to express their sympathy. The messages also speak of expressions of condolence and regard on tho part of the Japanese authorities. The Inoldent has created deep depression and anxiety among the foreign community of Shanghai. The news of the incident, which reached London in the forenoon, has deeply shocked public opinion. Sir Hughe, who is 51 years of age, was appointed Ambassador at Peking in September last year. Lady Knatchbull-Hugessen. with her two daughters, is believed lo have been on holiday at Peitai-ho, in North China, where the British authorities immediately tried to get in touch with her.
